Best source for 720 mAh NiMH?

Hi Folks,

I've seen a bunch of posts here lately regarding the use of 8 cell 720 mAh NiMH flat battery packs in park flyers (particularly the GWS Zero).

What's the best place to buy these packs?

Thanks,

Carl

Fred,

Thanks for the link ... I'm in VA but don't see any problems ordering from CA. I did not see flat 8 cell packs, but did see 8 cells NiMH (two stacked flat 4 cells packs) packs that looked suitable for the Zero:

R8-HRAAAU - 8 cells 1.65" x 1.8" x 0.9" 3.8 oz. $28.00

Will this configuration fit? Loooks like it should.

Thanks,

Carl

If you're able to assemble your own packs, there's a guy (RockinrollBlue I think) on the For Sale forum that sells these cells for 61 cents apiece.

He takes PayPal and ships very quickly.

If you are interested in assembling your own, send an e-mail to <jtautimer@home.com> .

I bought enough cells to make four seven cell packs, and I think it cost $20 including shipping. I don't know if they are still selling them or at what price.

They are Maxcell brand NiMH, rated at 700 mah. I have been very satisfied with them, and regularly get 15 or more minutes of flying time with an MG-1 powered 12 ounce model.

If you need a different configuration or cell count than Tony shows on his web site, just send him an email and ask about availability. He placed a special order for some 10-cell 720NiMH packs for me. I still got them in under a week and a half. And I live in NC. Eflightpacks is great to work with.

Let me chime in here with DaJudge and Jayboy: forget about the Sanyo 720's and get some of those 61 cent 700 Maxcells. They are the greatest deal going.

The 700mah Maxell NiMH are supposedly Sanyos. I have over 30 of them and they are GREAT! Send an email to:
Rockinrollblue1@aol.com to get latest info. I got them when they were $.50

Hey guys,

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll order some of these NiMh cells. Now, how difficult is it to put my own pack together? I've never done this before. Can someone give me a rundown of:

1. What I will need (wires, connectors etc.)
2. Any special tools I need other than a regular soldering gun
3. A good description of how to do this.

Thanks again. Looks like this could save a lot of $$ and get me a lot of flight time.

making your own packs is cake. I would test each cell before you start soldering, though. The only way you could mess it up is if you get the cell too hot and the button pops. Here is the best tutorial I found:

Anyone done a head to head comparison of these two cells, that is, the Maxell 700's vs. Sanyo 720's? Just curious about any performance differences.

Battery construction....see picture in http://geocities.com/hoppyfl
Shows use of radio shack desoldering braid. Buy a 45-50W soldering iron with a iron coated tip. The plain brass/copper ones oxidize so fast they are worthless! You can spot the right tip by its silverish color on outer 1/2" of tip. Sears has the tips, you can tell the right ones by the price, about $8 for 2.

Be sure and slow charge the pack overnight at 30-50ma.
