Cool! And it's waterproof too!

I was able to con the wife into knitting a fender for me (I really tried, but dang I couldn't get the hang of it!).
Basically, knit a triangle with an appropriate string. Macrame might be even better (couldn't get the hang of that either). Roll like a cigar, fat in the middle, and put a few stitches in to hold it together. The seam can be postioned behind. But first, run a couple long strings through it for tieing up.

I heard that you can get a nice "nasty" old finish by dying in tea. I happened to have some coffee... never make that mistake again! The color is great, but coffee has oils, and it still smells like stale brew on a warm day.

But the finest fender I've ever seen was on a Brooklyn at the Ft Wayne Regatta (second picture). The whole boat was great.

Since "Ol' Guy" pointed out this thread, I thought I would add to it.

For the Fire boat, or, solid rubber bumpers, most people find some sort of "neoprene" gasket material. I went to a shop called Seals Unlimited and purchased seven feet of "shore 60" hardness 3/8"x1/2" neoprene rubber strip.

Some people cut up rubber model car and truck tires for their bumpers.

And for the vertical or horizontal serated rubber bumpers some of the modelers will cut up bicycle tires and glue that on edge to a strip of rubber.
That way, not only do they create the serated rubber strip, the cut bicycle tire also has the radial fiber layer. It looks really good when done.

Cast fenders...

Have a look here under Galleries, Vancouver. These are actually from the Nanaimo show though. Photo 1545 shows a fender on the tug made from small squares of leatherette (old tractor seat I think!). Fellow cuts and glues them together with CA. They look very good.

Seen another idea where you get hold of a dish washing cloth and cut that up to shape. Maybe you get good a knitted type one from an "organic" type store. You can also fray yhe bottom a bit to give it a used look.

Bumber mahem.

Just to add to the bumper mahem. I too had my wife work her crochet magic to build my bumpers. Can be dyed to any colour.
