Anyone have the HL Hot Rod?

I'm just finishing up building the Hobby Lobby Judge 540 (nice kit). I'm looking for something a little bigger, in the 20 - 22 oz range, that can handle windy days. The HL Hot Rod looks interesting, has anyone got it - any comments on it?

I think I would use an Axi motor with it, would the 2208/24 be best for this? I would also use the CC25 controller. Not sure if I would use a TP 2100 or a Kokam 2000 - any comments on what would be best?

Malcolm,

We did a lot of testing on this airplane and it's awesome. While you could probably get an Axi to work great with it, I really think the PJS1200 motor is the perfect choice for this plane. I really like the Kokam 2000mAh batteries. They have plenty of punch and are still light enough to get great performance. I'll have mine flying at the EAC Indoor Event next weekend. Let me know if you have any questions.

I'd like to wiggle the sticks on that thing! I'm thinking about doing a bigger foamy for flying outdoors.

I'm about to make a big statement here...I love the Hot Rod. It is one of the purest flying planes I have ever had and that includes my big .46 size balsa arfs. It does everything well and will make you look good. Give her as much rudder as you want and it whips the tail around like a car on ice. She is very true in elevators with no wing rock...and on and on. You ever fly a new plane for the first time and think, "I am so happy that there is a plane that does everything I have ever wanted and if I crash it I can buy another one!"? That's exactly what I though when I flew the Hot Rod. It is always in the back of my truck.
I have pushed the plane and the PJS as hard as I could and both still fly great after many months. The PJS makes it fly like a little a foamy but the larger airframe makes it more stable. I could go on and on!

Check out the video. This is the first time that Jason had flown the plane and the wind had to be between 7 to 10 mph.

I will be placing a Order on one pretty soon. The Big wing area and the fuse looks like makes it fly slow and hover really well.
Although im gonna put a Axi 2212/34 Motor on it.

You are really going to need a 2808/24 for the Big Hot Rod. We are running 3 cell 2,000 LiPos.

Alright Jim, you Randy and Jason talked me into it. I just ordered the plane and motor you suggested. After watching you and Jason fly it indoors at Memphis I'm sold. When are you guys going to offer an add-on rack for launching and landing the Mini-Hot Rod off it's back??? (if you weren't at the Memphis indoor fly-in you have no clue do you?) Funny, funny stuff!!!

You will be happy. This plane does everything a 3D plane should, she even flies like a real plane if your into wierd concepts like that.

Speed
The Judge is 16 oz and uses the 2212. The Hot Rod is 22 oz and I think it's need a bigger motor to give the performance that a plane like this deserves. I just want to make sure you have a big, silly smile on your face the first time you fly the Hot Rod and hit the "go" stick.

I know what you mean Speed, when I was 16 I stayed broke! I can't imagine tying to support this hobby when I was your age! The big reason I just ordered this plane is to be able to fly in some wind. Most of my foamies can't handle much beyond a breeze. The Hot Rod being larger and heavier should do much better in the wind. The wind blows a good bit in Willis doesn't it. That right above Houston isn't it?
