Pedal Launcher Article

Your welcome Malcom, as you can see, that is the pedal launcher I built and I must say it works very well. Dave Lilley has said he is going to add the Pedal Launcher article I wrote to the Ezone family of construction articles to help other Ezoners.

this is very cool indeed, but could it be put on the roof of a car and then you launch, fly your plane in front of the windshield..........

Schluter60....

What are you using for a nylon hook mounted on the bottom of your plane?

The ends of the bungee with metal "eyes" were attached by Hollyday Designs when I purchased the 20' bungee.
What type of buisness is Hollyday Designs?
I'd like to get a professionally made bungee like that....Oh and what diameter is it?

Schluter, you also said you use a fish scale to determine the pull on the bungee for different planes. Can you give some examples?

Thanks in advance,

Wiz

Pedal launcher Questions / Answers

Saint 152, I use different types of hooks depending on the type of aircraft. On the Multiplex Picojet Combat I use a modified nylon control horn. On the Twinjet I use a small metal screw eye (with the eye 1/2 cut off) through a 1" long piece of maple located in the channel on the bottom. The maple is light for a small piece and it stregthens the mount to withstand the launch and landing. I find the hooks take more abuse on landing than on launch if you don't bleed off almost all of the airspeed before you touch down.

Mike W., I ordered the bungee with ends from Hollydale Designs. http://www.hollyday.com/. Last I checked they were taking the summer off, but they should be back in the fall. I've seen surgical tubing at our local Lowes that would also work for about 1.35 a foot. I used a fish scale at firat to get a starting point, but now I just pace off the distance and drive in my anchor stake. The bungee I use is 20' long and I stretch it out to 60' (3 : 1 ) for the planes I'm launching. I definately woouldn't stand in front of one ready for launch, they come off the launcher like an aircraft carrier launch.

Foam pipe insulation?

I imagine the insulation protects the undersides of the wings from bumps etc, but do you need to use anything else for the wings to slide freely on launch? Maybe the foam is slicker than it looks

Foam Insulation

The foam insulation is regular pipe insulation. It protects the wings and the rails are adjustable so you can keep the servos and linkages clear. These planes are very light and the bungee provides plenty of power so the drag created by the foam is negligible.

Launcher

Many thanks. This is exactly what I was looking for. I couldn't figure out how the release pedal and pin worked.

Again thanks,

Here's mine.

Same idea, but shorter PVC tubing ( can have extension pieces inserted into end ) and smaller launch mechanism.
