Would 30 and 1/8 inches be okay?

Take a look at the Wattage Hawk, it's small, fast and durable.

The micro cap is cool and I have scratch built one very similar to it. The reason I mention it is I just wanted you to know it is a very advanced fun 3d plane. Not a good choice as a second plane, but if your pilot skills are great then go for it and you will not regret it.

When you say 3 channel you mean rudder, elevator and throttle right? The micro Cap is gonna be 4 channel. If you are talking 4 channel I like the Littlebirdz.com G-Nat. Flies great on CD motor.

A plane with the capabilities you are referring to would usually be 4 channel and you would want that anyway because using the rudder in flight is a great learning adventure and good practice to better your pilot skills. I had the hardest time learning 3d flying because I learned to fly using rudder only as a ground control thing.

40 mph is actually pretty fast. It seems slow when you think about it but when measured with a speed gun you would be surprised. I saw a speed wing I thought was doing 70+ easy and it was in the mid 50s. Agree on the 4 channel thing unless you want elevator aileron only. That is entirely possible for a pylon type plane.

Any of these will knock your socks off in the speed department. They're depron pusher jets and they are very fast with a hot brushless motor.

Here's Steve Shumate aka jetset44s links.

Steve is very prolific and he is currently working on a F-14 if you don't mind waiting a little bit.

If that wasn't enough, Steve has inspired others to use his technique as follows:

And for those who asked "Why not ducted?"

P.S. All of the above plans are free, you just supply your own 6mm Depron or 1/4" blue or pink fan fold foam(FFF).

P.P.S. Plans for the A6 and SR-71 are in the works and are not available yet. There are enough photos in both threads for the adventurous to make their own.

This man knows of that which he speaks! I own a speed gun and clock planes at fly-ins, most of the people are disappointed when they find out what their planes are -really- doing I have a little delta EDF that people were guessing flew 65+. BUT, fastest clock on it has been 52. The small size (16" wingspan) really makes it looks like it's moving. I have another little EDF that I just clocked at 60 2 days ago. The thing looks like it's going Mach 2 though

Regarding the topic at hand, HET-RC makes some nice little 3 channel balsa ARFs that are under 30" and can be quite fast on direct drive. Here are some links:

Oops, hang on, are you looking for 3 channel as in rudder/elev/throttle or aileron/elev/throttle? I assumed aileron as 40+ mph planes usually are.
