Page Aviation 40" Super Cub Build Thread

I'm sure that after the release of his 80" Super Cub designed for electric power Adrian was bombarded with requests for a smaller version of his 80" hit which can be seen in this build thread, I know that I was one of them that asked (and more than once) as I don't currently have a way to haul the bigger plane around. After the countless requests that I'm sure he got, he's designed and is now selling a 40" Laser cut kit. After some badgering to get a kit, it looks as if I'll be the first to do a build thread on the smaller version. I sure hope that I can do it justice.

Specifications:
  • 40" wingspan
  • 26" long
  • Weight: 16 to 17 oz.
  • Wing area: 230 sq. inches
  • Wing loading: 10 oz./square foot
  • Recommended power system: GWS 300A motor and 1200mah 2 cell lithium battery and 8 x 6 prop.

Kit features:
  • Laser cut balsa and ply parts
  • Vac-formed windshield and side windows
  • Vac-formed cowl
  • Top quality hardware
  • Pre-bent landing gear
  • Rolled black line plan
  • Illustrated instruction book

PDF Instructions in Color

And last but not least a couple of teaser pic's from Adrian's site.

The box arrives

The box arrived today, much to my surprise as it was just shipped from Canada last week. My personal goals for this build are to accomplish a few things. I want to build it true and right and to the spec, I hope to add my first set of nav lights to a project with this build and I want to do a true to life scale covering job. I also would like to do a moving pilot head figure that is tied to the rudder in this one. The one last goal that I have is to build my first CD-Rom type motor to power it with. I also plan to later on add some floats and do some lake and night lake flying with it. I have a Hobby Lobby Mini Telemaster that I fly with my boys off the lake, but it does not have lights or ailerons so this will be a treat. Well those are my goals, the pictures below are just some teasers to get the thread started, if work and family obligations will allow I hope to build and document this over the next few weeks.

James, just no laughing when I glue my fingers together...

I'm itching to get going right now, but I can't... to many honey do's and work related stuff left to do tonight, but I just had to post something as I'm so excited and I figured that a thread would keep me at it...

Bill,

No problems, I wouldn't laugh at you anyway because it's hypocritical, especially coming from someone as clumsy as me. And often with far worse things (I somehow managed to staple my thumbs together when I was 8!).

Ouch, now that would hurt... I hope that I don't do anything that painful...

Post #2 of this thread, that's the DIY Brushless CD-Rom motor that I'm thinking of trying. I've been emailing back and forth with Steven a bit trying to figure out which number of winds, kit, etc. to try. I just like that silent power and efficiency.

Tram,

See my last post, and please, feel free to jump in and post some pictures of your build as well. What happened to your big one, you still gonna finish it?

Bill-

I will post some pics.. I've just started working for a new company - so I've been pretty busy lately - but should get it going soon..

Still have the big one - I plan on finishing it, other things just keep getting in the way.

Tram,

Very cool, congrats on the new job. I started a new one back in the middle of December. So far it's going great, and I'm really enjoying it.

I'm still quiet busy on everything else though...

I hope to start getting some CA on my fingers tomorrow night...

Thanks. I hope it works out - the last gig I had like this fell through, if I'm lucky I'll be sitting right seat in some Mu2's, CJ2's and a few King Air's - c90 to the 350..

As far as the cub - the scale factor is what is slowing me down on the big one. I am looking for the backwoods deal on these.. big tundra tires, etc. I have a feeling I'll get some glue on the fingers tomorrow..

The build begins...

Update time, big update, lots of pictures, and a couple of comments.

I don't have a lot of build or document time and this is not the 'only' project that I'm working on right now. Anyway, as I promised though, I hope to do a little each night or every other night as much as I can.

First I located the fuse bits and laid them out, after re-reading to make sure the very light laser marks were on the outside I assembled a right and left side. The point of the razor blade in the second and third picture is pointing to one of the laser marks. It's just a very faint burn mark that will come into play in the next steps. No big deal other than to make sure that the two halfs are a right and a left and that the lines are on the outside. The bit that my razor is pointing two in picture one will be cut out and glued in later. I did not find a mention of when to glue it in, but in the color PDF instructions in a later step I noticed that they were glued in. More on it later...
