Need an Idea for a kids plane

I am looking for an idea of something for my son to fly. Either BUY or BUILD.
I have had some bad crashes lately with balsa and reynolds wrap planes, they realy don't hold up for a beginner. I just got a bundle of Bluecor and was thinking of making some kind of plane with the prop after the wing or on the tail. Maybe something like a tipsy but a really slow one. I also bought a few Sky riders from walmart to try and convert for him, I read somewhere that someone did one for their nephew or something and it worked well.

Thanks

What size? What power systems do you have/want to buy?

I built my son a Kadet Senior to learn on - extended the wing to 91 inches for a Real floater...but you can't fly that with a 280 motor. Takes at least 12 cells.

How many cells, and how much motor, do you have/are you used to?

I was hoping to use something like a DXA and Qualcomm 830 setup, that way he won't have to worry about charging(I got 5 of them). I put an order in to Todd's for a few different motor/prop setups, but mostly smaller stuff under 5 amps. I got a GWS pico and a JR micro in flight packs.

I just finished a bluecore L-19 Bird dog project powered by a DXA motor and Qualcom. Test flew tonight in a 5 MPH breeze and it was great. It has a 37" wingspan and controls are elevator and aileron. In calm weather it will be a great trainer for my 7 and 9 year old sons. Would be glad to describe the construction with you if you are interested.

Oh, in testing, these are durable enough to plow straight into the ground after missing a loop and with minor repairs fly minutes later. Took a total of 2 hours from concept to test flight!

Regards,
Mike Moore

Thanks!

Here is a photo of the first prototype. Second looks much better but was given away to my boss! If you are still interested please e-mail me and I will explain my building methods. Also, if you have the capability to print out plans I could send you a file you can print out for the profiles.

Get a Teddy. My niece loves hers, and if you do bang it up, 5 minute epoxy or Elmers fixes it (depends on how much of a rush your in). $50, Hobby People.

The Blue Frog

Thanks Eddie,

I didn't see this thread right away. I do think that the Frog is perfect for a beginner. I taught my neighboor to fly in about 1 lesson with my Frog the other day. I fly mine with the GWS DX-A (same as Tigermoth or Litestick) and the Qualcomm 830 Li-Ion batteries. 34" wingspan, 7.5oz with the QC batts. I routinely get 30+ minute flights with that motor and battery combo. Plus I've dorked mine into the ground at full throttle. (I had elevator and rudder servos reversed, so technically it's not my fault. So I know it's durable.

I do sell the plane as a kit for $45 + shipping, but seeing has how you've already got a pack of BlueCor, maybe we could work something out for just plans. On the kits, the wing is heat formed, but it is possible to hand bend one into shape. (It's just not as attractive.)

I'm currently talking to some foam molding companies about getting the frog produced from the same material as the carry out containers. I'd love to add all kinds of curves to the design. Anything along those lines won't happen for months, so I'd like to see more people flying the Frog in the meantime.

Please get in touch,
-Dan

L-19 Bird Dog

I thought your prototype Bird Dog looked Great !

I know you were talking with Rivethead about getting some plans to him. I'd really be interested in those plans, too !

Do you suppose you could email be a set ? And maybe any building insights and specs.

I'd be most greatful.

Paul

Harm:
Gosh, it's cool seeing Max fly! Is he yours? I'm trying to get my 11 yr.old going and the Slowboy looks like a nice solution.

I am also trying to start a club where his classmates can fly in the school gym (and I get to fly indoors ). Something like the Slowboy might work; can you post a link for this plane ?

Mike: I can build the Bird Dog from you picture.

Hippo: I've already told you I thought the Frog was cool
