Jamara 1/12 FW-190

A friend of mine is considering the <a href="http://www.jamara.com/Planes/FockeWulf.htm">Jamara 1/12 FW-190</a> for E-power.

Anyone who can suggest a tried combo? Permax 450?

At first I thought I would use a 450 Permax motor and a 7x800AR battery pack for the power plant. But I quickly realized that while the Permax motor has just enough power to fly the plane, it wouldn't give me the performance I wanted. After checking around on the E-Zone discussion groups, a fellow E-Zoner suggested the Velkom 2020/27. The Velkom offered better performance then the Permax 450, could take an 8 cell pack and 10 more amps, and was slightly lighter that the 450.




Specifications:
FW-190:

Wing span: 32.68 inches
Fuse Length: 31.1 inches
Wing Area: ~245sq/in
Flying weight: ~38oz
Radio: Hitec 555 receiver, two Hitec HS-81 servos
Velkom 2020/27 Motor:

Prop: Graupner 8x4 Slim Prop and Graupner 1.5 inch spinner
Battery: 8x800AR cells
Current: 29.3 amps
Power: 216 watts
Prop Rpm: 12500 RPMs

Yikes!! that's one heavy model for it's size.. 38oz. 32" span is s400 territory
If it could be built to weigh 18oz..(or a bit less) then a s400 would be adequate power.. the Pete Nicholson 'Model Designs' F190 plan makes a fine 32" span s400 model.

38oz..ouch! Not a problem when you have the power though but still...

power plant

Hello,
I have a Global FW190 after reading the review I could confirm is an almost identical model to the Jamara.

I have been trying to get this model airborne with no real success so far.

The power plant is:
Graupner sp400 7.2v, 2.33 Gearbox on 10 600AE cells (a bit 'hot' I think) and a 9x6 APC prop.

I just found that the Dymond480 (2.33 shaft) should perform better for the same cell count, have anyone tried this config?
What about a 10x6 or even 10x7 prop ?
I would like to think about other alternatives before going with a more expensive brushless.
Any one had any success with a ferrite motor?

I'm wondering if the problem maybe that the small 600AE don't deliver enough current to the motor. Current run times on the workbench are barely 3 to 3.5 mins

My experience is that the current power plant has barely enough thrust to produce some decent lift, never got higher than 4/5 feet after a 30mts ROG !!

Just to make ROG easier I'm replacing the tinny wheels with other larger and softer wheels and a stronger piano wire.
Any recomendations about the angle on the landing gear for this particular bird?

A flying aquaintance of mine has gone through hell and high water getting his Jamara FW-190 to fly well. He's using a Jeti 15/3 and 8x800AR's with an 8x6 prop. It has the power to go, bit the wing is so thick, and the model is SOOO heavy it is mandatory to bungee or catapult it to get it in the air.

He has problems tip stalling it on launch as it is on the ragged edge of flying in the early stages.

I tried a test flight on it and I got it flying. Once it was in the air it was A LOT of fun, but when the batteries faded it was turf city because it glided like a rock with about the same sink rate to keep it flying.

If possible, I'd go with the RTF Ta-152 moulded gem or another design that can be built lighter and with a better airfoil.

Thanks for the quick reply, before the Jeti motor have you tried any other motor (i.e. non brushless).

Yes, I do agree is like a flying rock !, it's quite heavy but I'm just trying to get it airborne for now and hesitate about buying a more expensive motor.

Any other mods on this plane that anyone knows?

To be honest Jamara never said it was suited to electrics, and it really isn't.
We had 2 in our club with 15 glow motors. They were both very tricky to launch, but crashed for other reasons.
Personally I wouldn't consider electric power in this model under any circumstances.

Oh dear, I wish you'd started this thread earlier. Ive just completed the conversion of the same model, except mine is a bit heavier.

Modellhaus in the UK converted one of these with a Speed 600 on 8 cells (I assume sub-Cs).

Ive followed the same route but used a geared (2.1:1) 600 on 8x2400 with a 11x7 MA wood electric prop. Ive not attempted to fly the model yet - I only completed it on Monday. Now Im worried, if the model sinks with a lighter setup, mines going to be subterrainian by the time I get to feed up in!

Mine is the FW190 from Global and distributed by Hobby People, they do market this bird as a Gas/electric, and their suggestion is to use a 380 on 8x600 or a 450 for better performance if you do the electric option.

Wow, this has got to be another model. The one I've flown wouldn't even GLIDE to the smoking hole with a 380 on 600AE's.

Mark- As far as you S600 geared setup goes, you may be OK with your model assuming you bungee it. The geardrive will help but certainly be sure your pitch speed is up to at least 60 MPH or so. Also, on the test flight, I'd try using something lighter than the 2400's to get it trimmed out. Best of luck, you will probably fly, at least it's not a small direct drive motor so you have that going for you! Looking at the prop it seems like you will have plenty of power.

I built a Pica 1/12 FW190A and originally flew it with a 2:1 geared T450 on 10 800AR cells. It barely flew at 42oz and there was no way it would ever do well on that powerplant. I eventually reconfigured it with a Jeti 15/4 on 7 CP1300 cells and 8x7 prop and it flys very well now at about 36.5 oz.

It still uses about half the runway to take off and landings have a high pucker factor as it needs to come in real fast. Like Ed says, it glides like a rock so it is absolutely mandatory to watch the timer because you don't even want to try a deadstick approach.

I do agree and before I ordered the model I taught it may be sufficient, but after I have built it is not enough.
