Dornier DO-X

Hi gang,

This has been on my "to do" list for a while and it looks like it will finally come to fruition this spring. I'm looking at making this beast at 1/39 scale giving a wingspan of 48" and a wing area of 460 sq in. My target weight with 6 IPS-dd's would be 17.5 oz giving 80 watts/lb and a 5.5 oz wing loading. Conversely, if I decide to go all out and use 12 IPS-dd's, my target weight will be 22 oz, giving 127 watts/lb and a 7 oz wing loading.

Anyway, I think I'll document here how I go from 3-view to flying model if anyone's interested. It should be an interesting project.

Martin

Good Luck Martin, Keep us posted please. I`d go a bit bigger and go for all 12 engines, maybe 6ft . The sound will be worth hearing. Anybody got memories of the big glo powered one from a while back ?

Great project Martin!

I haven't heard of any 12 motor driven aircraft yet-I'm sure it would be a first.

Best of luck.

Cheers

Tim

While I don't think that 12 engine motors would be a first in this day and age, but it will certainly be a sexy plane. I've seen the four engined version Dornier, in a glow motor setup. Very nice in the air.

This photos shows that you need to thread it through a tunnel...

...a very regal looking bird.

A few yeas ago a freeflight electric Do X was published, I think it was Don Srull who built and flew it. It wasn't all that big and it used HiLine or MRC motors for power. No record of it being able to fly off the water...

Every year that goes by, the technology advances so that models like this are possible; how wonderful!

Hi Martin , Have a look at attached jpeg lifted from the Skymasters club report on one of their fabulous float-fly events. Maybe you can track the builder via them on www.skymasters.org

Good catch. First time I noticed the sub-horizontal stab. I have never seen one before.

Here is Don Srull's DO-X first built in 1989 as an electric free flight and now electric rc. Wingspan is about 42-48 inches or so. His plans were published in Model Aviation I think.

Man, ain't that gorgeous? No surprise that he converted it. Any word on whether it gets off the water or not? No motor torque problems there...

Wow thanks for the plug for my club. The Dornier is Laddie Mikulasko's.

Here's one step towards the DO-X. Granted it's only eight motors but it's my first scratch build strictly from 3-views

Your smile tells it all. Congratulations. Looks great in the air. How does it handle and sound with "only" eight going?
