Maxir construction thread

Got my Maxir, thought I'd post some images of the construction process...

This is not a standard micro-heli, this is more like building a big machine! (So far!)

Following pictures are:
-Original box (Obviously!)
-Parts packages

Construction photos:
-Initial frame set - parts are cut and there are some rough edges that should be trimmed to clean it up. You can see the scraps in the corner.
-I decided to dye the parts, as I didn't like the yellow

I used Rit dye, this was after 15 minutes...
-1 hour later, same conditions...

: (I fully realise that you must have shown the pix out of sequence...) Looks really interesting... how is the all-up cost going to look vs the H2 etc?

Back to the construction details....

-Frame starts to take shape
-Inserted main mast and gear for alignment before tightening screws
-Tail boom build up showing front bearing and inner boom bearings with sleeves
-Installed bearing on tail drive shaft to the correct location, sleeve and gear go on next

Issues so far:
-Had to slightly turn down main mast in order to fit in bearings
-All outer and inner tail boom plastic parts were too tight. I used a fine dremel sanding tool to shape them for better fit
-Tail drive shaft too thick, needed to be turned down quite a bit in order to fit bearings/gear
-Tail shaft gear cracked, Russ (current US distributor) is getting one out to me. He's doing a good job starting out in this arena!

Anyone that built one of the original Hornets or Piccolos will remember similar issues.

My servo selection is done:

Sure, that tail 'thing' is way overrated on helicopters

Actually, may be able to hover it in the basement Monday night. Gotta wait til the next indoor event or for the weather/sun cooperate to really hammer on it

Received my kit today!

I actually really like the yellowish/greenish color of the frame - something out of the ordinary...

Wow, this think takes time to put together, with all the small parts and all. The manual is pretty terrible but with the 3D diagrams of the parts on the seperate parts sheet it can be figured out.

During construction the damn manual didn't mention putting those two bearings on the tail drive shaft (you can only see it in the parts list), so I had to take it apart and rebuild it...

Oh yeah, can't finish my kit either as one of the main shaft housing elements were missing from my kit!

Anyhow it looks like it is going to be a neat little heli, you just need to take your time with contruction, not only not to leave things out, but becasue the parts can very easily be damaged. I accidentally broke off one of the linkage balls from the inner swashplate while tryong the press the bearing on. Need to get one of these too...

Once everything is sorted out though, it looks like it will fly very well.

My bad, it is mentioned I just didn't get it the first time (I just reread the manual).

pwkpete, did you have a chance to fly the heli yet? I have to wait for the spares to continue building.

Here is a picture of where I am at now in my build beside my T-rex for someone wanting to know the size.

No, just got the head together, will post few more pictures later...

This definitely is a builders heli and not for someone new to helis. Tolerances are very tight, I may have gotten a 'Friday' kit. Nothing seems to fit smoothly. Main and tail shafts were too thick, along with the feathering shaft. Oneway screw holes were misaligned, orange tail spacer too long, and that's just what I cen remember off the top of my head. Tail is still a little tight for my preferences.

Yeah, it takes quite an effort to put it together. But if I had to build another one, it would be pretty quick now...

I had some of the same fitting problems. My were:

- tail boom too thick but for only one of the bearings
- have to use the hammer a lot to slide on/in parts

- the main blade holders wouldn't fit together snugly (a sanding block did the trick)

Luckily my mainshaft and feathering shafts were finebut I too had to spend quite some time to get the tail right. It runs pretty smoothly now. Its pretty hard to get the input abd output gears to be in the right place as they are friction mounted, and as such are really hard to move. This is one of the places where a hammer and some tools will help greatly.

Actually I think it is not bad at all that all the parts fit so snugly. Once you can get them to fit together there is no slop at all! It think it's going to fly real nice and tight! It's just the way you have to figure out how best to tackle all the mounting tasks that can be very time consuming. To add to this the parts are pretty fragile...

Now I have to mount those Futaba 3108s somehow...
