I use CutePDF Writer to convert MS Word documents to PDF for our club's website. It's free. You will need to test it with graphics since those can come out jagged.

How about a Footy registry or "class association"? I've been thinking about building a Bobabout since i saw it on your website a couple of years ago! looks like fun!

There is a long thread there on Footys.
There is a move afoot(pun intended) to make the Footy a AMYA class.
We are talking about class rules and various other issues there.
I want to make plans and building info freely avalible for this class.
I belive there is great potential in the future for these small models.
I have plans for "BobAbout2" drawn up..will post at some stage in the future.

I have two of them under construction. Instead of balsa ply for the hull: a medium sized "For Sale" sign glued with marine GOOP, part of a rubbermaid container lid for the rudder, popsicle sticks for the servo mounting rails, and tyvek postal service mail bags for sails. I'll post pictures once I get them seaworthy. One of them has servos, keel, rudder and mast mounted but no other spars or rigging. The other is just a hull. I hope to have them sailing in the coming months.

Hi,

Is this a good first yacht for someone who's never sailed a model yacht before? I've looked at the plans and the hull and keel looks straight forward enough (to someone who builds model planes).

My main problem is I can't figure out the rigging and how the servos are linked to the sails and rudder. Would anyone have photos of how that is done and of how the mast is mounted?

Thanks.

Jeff

Hi,

At the bottom of the page there should be a button labelled "Go Advanced". Click on it and it will take you to a page where you can make attachements using the "Manage Attachments" button.

Regards,
Jeff

Hi Park Jeff,
Yes that area of the plans needs some work,I must get to that at some point.
I find a pull/pull system works well for the rudder, just like on an airplane.
For the sails attach a 30mm servo horn to the servo and set up a double purchase system. The line starts at the rear of the hull then goes forward to the servo arm then back to the rear of the hull where it exits the hull through the little tube shown on the drawing,it then runs forward to the sails on deck. This way the servo pulls in twice the ammount of line. I will try to find a photo.
Cheers
Micro

Hi Micro Sailor,

Firstly thanks so much for publishing your plans.

I think I'm having problems only because I've never done this before and anyone with any experience would be able to sort it out in no time as your plans are quite detailed.

Thanks for the tip on pull/pull for the rudder. I hope you'll bear with a few more novice questions.

I understand what you mean by doubling back the line so that the servo pulls twice the amount it would otherwise. However I'm still confused how the line attaches to the sails. Is it just the one line which attaches to both sails or does each sail have it's own line?

Would appreciate photos of your installation if you have any.

Thanks again.

Jeff

One line comes out through the back tube which attaches to another which goes to the jib sail whilst another goes to the mainsail.
Not a good explanation or a clear pic but I hope you get it.

The line going to the mainsail in the photo is not clear, its a very light white line so differcult to see.
