Bristol Scout prototype kit flies
Hi,
For all those who expressed an interest in the soon to be released kit for a s400 Bristol Scout, I have finished building the prototype kit. Her maiden flight was made in far from ideal weather conditions but she coped well. No final attempt at trimming was made because it was just too windy, but more flights are to come. Here's how she looks, she's 34.5" span and weighs 21 oz. ready to fly. |

The model is powered by a 6volt 400 in a Mini Olympus gearbox and uses 7x500 AR cells. For more acurate information about release dates contact Kurt Bengtson at :- kurt@bengco.com

Designing on the edge
|
I think I should mention here the plans for this model. Now, that Pete has taken our prototype kit and we have found the bugs in the plan, I hope to get the changes to our laser cutter service by next week. I believe that we can see a release date of somewhere in early to mid April. The kit will include all necessary laser cut parts, CAD designed plans, complete instructions, neoprene/balsa/ply wheel kit and a CD with building instructions, and other goodies. We are aiming to produce the top tier in quality kits available. Tentative price for the kit is $69.95 We will sell it on the net and we can take all major credit cards.

Designing on the edge

George,
Thank you for the comments. BTW, the design is Pete's. I modified it a little to make kitting it easier, but the credit for the plane should go to Pete. |

Will the kit have ailerons, or if not, do you have any comments about if they could/should be added by the builder? In flying similar sized bipes lately I have found myself wishing for ailerons.

Designing on the edge

Greg,
No, the kit does not have ailerons. Pete can tell you about the flying qualities of this plane. From what Pete told me, this plane really flies very well without them. As for adding ailerons, I suppose that it could be done. I can imagine a center servo in the wing with a snake system to wing tip ailerons. A torque rod arrangement could also be done. I will check to be sure that the position of the scale ailerons is on the plan. |

Another beauty Peter. I hope the one I'm working on will look as good as yours. I'll post pictures when it's complete.

Beautiful job Peter. What is the paint you used on the top surfaces? It has the right look to it - a slightly purple hue that I noticed on the Shuttleworth Bristol F2B. I have decided your pre WW I & WW I designs just fit the bill for any future building I start. I have an Eastbourne Monoplane framed up (I confess - its a Pat Tritle kit) and have Peter Rake WWI plans spread all over the spare room. Now I will wait to order the Scout kit as well. I'm still getting over the heartbreak of looking all over the LA area for the latest issue of Flying Scale Models to get that wonderful BE 2c plan and finding an obscure little French lightplane instead. Its a cute little plane, but just not the same thing as the BE 2c. Oh well. I will live with the disappointment until the next issue comes out. I called the distributor here in LA and will attempt to get back issues and a subscription to assure a steady supply of your designs. Perhaps when I retire in a few years I will use your design philosophy and a few old peanut scale plans to scale up some other types.

Peter, what a beautiful plane. The Bristol Scout is one of my earliest scale favourites, ever since an article with 3-views and color schemes was published in "Air Enthousiast" in the early eighties. I ordered a plan from Radio Modeler (I think) and started construction, but I got stuck on producing a decent cowl. Later I found the perfect cowl by chance in a shop near London, but then my interests had already shifted to something else. Seeing your pictures sort of rekindles it!.

Hi All,
Thanks for the nice remarks about the little Bristol Scout. Gerry, The upper surfaces are actually Olive Drab Litespan, rather than paint. It's not quite as purple as the photo shows, must have been the light conditions, but it does have a greyish purple tinge and looks acceptable. Some people liked the Sablier, but like you many were disappointed. The BE2c plan definitely is in the next issue. Greg Ailerons would work fine, and be fairly easy to add. They are on all four wings, so I would suggest a micro servo in each lower wing panel. Take the leads to a Y lead in the fuselage and use wire links between top and bottom wings. Being a one piece model makes it that much easier. Pete |

Nice looking plane Pete. If it flies like it looks, you have a winner.
Keep up the great work. |
