Smallest Flying Wing Possible

Does anyone know if its possible to build a 12" flying wing. I think i might get some Blucore and try it. What motor/gearbox/battery combo would work best?

heh... that would be a fast plane.

It's probably possible to build a 3" flying wing... For that size, I'd snag the smallest direct drive motor you can, actually, you can probably just use this:

Use an IPS or LPS motor from GWS to power your plane. Just use that motor, a two cell li-poly from 250-800mah's, a light Rx (R4PII or less), some .20 or .16 oz servos, and a two amp esc. Should be a piece of cake.

I'd bet the LPS setup is your best. Balsa products had a LPS short brushless motor + ESC combo, but they're out of stock. You may want to use the cirrus joule servos and Rx + ESC's to stay on the safe side. It's just that they get expensive.

At 12" a CD-Rom motor and 4-6 gram servos will treat you very well for performance. You should be able to keep it under 3 oz. The little supermite that superflyrc has is only 16" as is the micro speed wing. It isn't hard to cut them down smaller, but probably isn't worth it.

To build much smaller than that you have to go to the expensive micro gear, and those aren't built to perform... only to be very small and still fly.

That Hobby Electronics 1230 motor/prop set was built basically as a GWS EDP50 copy. It's the same size and weight as the GWS motor but it doesn't perform as well. I've done extensive testing of both motors and the EDP50 motor is more efficient, run cooler, uses less current and produces more thrust. I'd just stick with the EDP50.

That HE 100mm X 80mm (4030) "twisty" prop is a very cool prop. I use them on some wings and other planes I have. Fits right on an EDP50 shaft. BP sells them alone for less than a buck, I love them.

I've heard that a certain wing manufacturer is working on a 12" EPP flying wing prototype. That would be a panic to fly!

Below 16" has too many diminishing returns to be fruitful. Acer made a 12" version over a year ago, but it's just too small to be useful outdoors and indoors there are funner things to fly. I'm having so much fun with the µsw running the Feigao Brushless on 3-cell 830 lipos at about 4.6 AUW, I decided to make another lighter version using 3-cell 340 lipos. It should come in at about 3.7 oz. AUW with the lighter cells and a couple of other mods for even more fun . These do totally unlimited vertical. The 4.6 oz. will do about 30 MPH vertical and 70 MPH level flight. The 3.7 oz. should do vertical at about 45 MPH and 70+ MPH level flight.

Yes... id like it to go pretty fast, so maybe under 16" isnt a good idea. What setup is good for a REALLY fast wing? Im a little short on $$, so i think a brushless is out of the question, but... what size is speedy?

or rather... whats teh best size wing for my current equipment:
-Electron 6 receiver
-HS-55 servos
-Blucore foam
-3S1P 1500 Kokam pack

Maybe i could add:
Speed 400 motor
C-20 ESC

What size do you guys think? 24"?

Did you search through the Micro and Indoor model's forum? There's planes well under your 12 inches there.
