Neumotor for Pattern Plane

Steve, what motor would you recommend for a .90 size pattern plane that will weigh about 9 lbs. Plan to use 8s-10s as required with 18-20" prop. Would like to see about 55 amps max.

Want something comparable to a Purple C5012XL.

I saw the specs for your 1515 2y but seems a little much for a .90 size plane. If reducing number of cells or prop size will allow use of this motor efficently, it could be the answer.

What are your feelings?

I'm not Steve, but I'm betting the 1512/2Y would be a good choice with an 18" or 19" prop and 10S.

I'm also betting the 1512/3D would be good with 8S.

You'll want one of the lessor ratio boxes than the 6.7:1 for 10s and an 18" or 19" prop. My 1515/2Y 6.7:1 only draws 54 amps with a 22x12 prop. 5.2, 4.2, and 3.7 ratios are available, Steve can probably tell you which one you should use.

I bought mine from Steve Belknap at FlyDMA. It was $350.00 with the gearbox, plus $5.00 priority mail shipping. I'm using a Kontronik 55-10-32 controller with it.

Jeff, running the figures in E-Calc, it looks like you'd pull about 54 amps with the 1515/2Y, 5.2:1 ratio, and a 19x10 APC-E prop on 10s3p TP6000 packs.

The 1515/1.5/6.7 or the 1515/2/5.2 are the likely choices in the larger motor size. The 1512/2Y/6.7 would be the fit also and is shorter and weighs less. Not all the motors are listed in the motor program so check the product list also.

Steve, how difficult is it to change gearboxes, say if I get a 1515/2 5.2 and then want to switch it to a 6.7 later? Is this something you would have to do at the factory?

It is not too tough--new pinion gear, carrier and planets. It can be done by the user--if you have the right equipment.

The gear box is attached with 4 screws through the gear box to the mounting plate.The gear box can't unscrew like some motors. As for lube--It would be a good idea to service every 50 flights or so when running at high power. A small dab of lithium grease is all thhan is needed--don't fill it up.

A rear support is a good idea but there is no need to clamp it.

Just in case anybody is interested, Cambria Tool has made a front plate for their aluminum mount that fits my NeuMotors 1509 gearbox. I should be getting the mount in a few days. When I do, I'll post a pic here in this thread.
