Help!.. Robbe Shulter P-51 Mustang

a friend has this plane, unbuilt. He knows nothing about it... Is it still made?.. power is direct drive speed 600.. I want to build it w/ a gearbox for more torque and slower flying.. any battery suggestions and prop/gearbox combo suggestions?... Again, it's a Robbe Shulter P-51 Mustang.. any help would be greatly appreciated

Yes the Mustang is still made. There have been quite a lot of posts about this model and it's stablemates - the Robbe Spitfire and Bf109

heres one thread http://www.ezonemag.com/disc/Forum12/HTML/000904.html

and there are quite a few others as well.

Watch out for the foam spinner- well worth replacing with something else. I saw a ?poorly balanced? one of these break up on the maiden flight, hit the hand launcher in the head and the resultant out of balance motor shook itself out of the airframe resulting in a crash from altitude.

Good Luck

Brian

Thanks Brian, I didn't find too many posts about powering them... alot on finishing though... sounds like 8x2400 sub c's and a 2.8:1 gearbox on a cam 10x8 might work... any thoughts?

Herb flies a similar powered FW190 I think - Balsacraft. (2,8:1 GB on 8cells)

I have flown the P51 on s600 BB 8,4V direct 8x4 on 8x2000RC. Performance was pretty good. (read adequately )

Have a look at this thread and maybe expand your search to include the Spitfire and Bf109/Me109 as well- they are all very similar models

thanks guys.. Having never flown or even built anything other than speed 400 skyscooter, this is going to be quite a challenge. The guy who has the kit is a glow pilot, and it's up to me to make this thing fly well, since he's really just a gas flyer.. Anything short of brushless will be acceptable, price wise...

That's a pretty big leap in one go, from a Skyscooter straight to a Mustang, perhaps it would be prudent to have something "intermediate" beforehand.

I have just the thing in mind

I realize it's a big leap.. but hey, what I really want is a hotliner or F5B! Talk about a big leap!... the thing is.. this guy already has the kit and is basically "handing the project over" to me and wants me to make it fly well. I'm not sure if I'm up to it skill level wise, but at least I want the correct power system to start out with. He knows how to build, so that shouldn't be too much of an issue, we will work on it in his basement.. I just hope to gather info on the best power system so we're not dissappointed in it's performance. thanks for the warning though
