Any advice on throws & C of G (I know you were using 3S) but thought I would give 2S a go first - can always escalate !

Nigel,
First off you have a talant for carving!!! pilot and guns look great on your plane.
And for CG, I think Peter called for about 1 1/8" from the LE middle wing.
I found 1/2" from the LE middle wing easyer to fly on 2s. And you might want to try a GWS 8x4.7 prop on your 17t, more thrust for just a bit more amps. Though GWS 8x4HD works good 2s or 3s.
You will love the slow fly-bys!
Good Luck with your Baby Baron, nice job!

Hi Windy City,

Thanks for your kind comments regarding the pilot & guns, to be fair, I have had a bit of practice - was a balsa basher for 35 years or so-ish !!!!!!!

Appreciate the info regarding the CG. Will go with the throws you mentioned in this thread a while back 1/2" on high rates & 3/8" on low.

I'm looking for sports / slowfly rather than 3D (my reflexes arent as fast as they used to be) so the slow fly-bys sound great.

Re the GWS props, I believe the GWS 8x4HD gives more thrust than an GWS 8x4.3RS AND at less amps ! (better prop)

Next message should be the maiden report.

Nigel

If it flys well, next one will be the 34" WS version.

Nigelp,
Balsa basher or not you got a eye for finishing off a plane!!!!
Sorry I missed the throws question.... (old brain )
Can't argue with you about the 8x4HD being a better prop! But on my 17t cdrom a 8x4.3 works just a little better... (might be the old brain thing again!)

Well you better get cutting on that 34" one! Cause you are going to like the way this one flys.

And if we don't here from you for awhile we'll know the maiden went great and you have more than one battery
Good luck anyway

Hi,

Windy City, I know what you mean about the Super Hero's - you are on the list because you contribute / encourage / are enthusiastic etc, etc.

Maiden on Thursday (?) if the wind stays down - will let you know.

Take care,

Nigel

Aw shucks, I've gone all red. I do it because I love it as I'm sure do the others. In my mind the mantra of a good forum is "Caring and Sharing".

It flew !!!!!!!

Maiden flight - very light winds. 17T / 26AWG swinging a GWS 8x4HD on a 2S 700mAh li-po. CG was as far forward as I could get it - approx 30mm (1 1/8") Throws 1/2" all round on high rates, 3/8" on low.

Took off on high rates. Tracked very straight - not much prop torque noticed. Had to use small amount of up elevator to get it to unstick. Switched to low & added one click up elevator. Climbout around 45 deg. Flew straight and level on 1/2 throttle. Felt very manouverable without being twitchy.

Did a loop, no problem. Didn't try rolls or stall, that's for later flights. After stooging around for a while and getting the feel of it, bought her in for a very slow three point landing ! Roll out was only about 4 feet.

Delighted !!!!!! Thank's to Peter for the design & drawing and all those on this forum for advice.

This one is a keeper !

Take care,

Nigel

Nigelp,
Congratulations!!! What a sweet flying plane.
Wait to you see/ try the slow rolls on a 1/2 throttle fly by. Very COOL.
Of all the planes I have this one get the most attention from people in the park. From the littlest kids to their Grandparents.

windy said awhile ago,

Can't wait to see your 34" one!

Again nice job!
Thanks again to Peter for sharing his time and efforts!

Baby Baron

Hi windy city,

It was calm tonight (just before dark) so I thought I'd give the Baby Baron a go. You weren't kidding !!!!!!!!! Slow rolls on half throttle (7.4v 2S !) Inverted - no problems at all. Low slow pases an absolute delight !

The mildest mannered plane I think I have ever flown - and all the above on low rates ! If it weren't for the ailerons I recon it would make a great trainer !

Take care,

Nigel

Nigelp,
Now you got to do the Big Brother!
And tell us how it compares... please!
Between work right now and the wife, my time is gone lucky to find some time to fly.

Windy City,

Will do - have just started on the 34" WS Baron version but will have to wait for some bits. I'm 3,000 miles from the nearest modelshop !

Take care,

Nigel
