Bearcat Panel Line 3-View?

I need a 3-view which shows panel lines for a Bearcat. I am nearly done with the construction of the Ryan Bearcat, and will be glassing soon.

BTW, I had always heard how great the Ryan kits were, but you really have to experience it yourself to believe it! The sheeting for the fuse alone is fantastic! It lines itself up nearly perfectly, and the fuse turns out straight, strong, and unbelievably light. Way to go Jim!

You have run into the hardest part of your Bearcat kit - Finding scale documentation on this plane!!!!

I found some pics of various Bearcats going through my old magazines. I have several model mags and "Aviation History" and air racing mags with good close up air shots of warbirds that I keep for panel line reference.

Barring that reference, go to Barnes and Nobles or similar and look through the magazine section. Aviation History and other mags have many good quality warbird photos. Often they are Mustang and Spitfire shots, but occasionally you'll see a Grumman Ironworks bird in there. Also, under "transportation" in the book section, you'll find many shots of warbirds in there. Also look under WWII history section - a few pics there you won't find with the rest of the airplane books. I have even purchased the odd book, for even one definative shot, during any number of scale projects. Unfortunately there are no "walkaround" or "in Action" books on the Bearcat.

If there were, I'd bet there would also be a dozen "BARF" Bearcats too. so I'll take the bad with the good. I like the fact that the Bearcat isn't overexposed.

I had limited success searching the internet for 3 views on Bearcats, but mabey you'll have more luck?

One of the reasons I like flying my Bearcat the best, besides the flying qualities, is the fact that not everyone has one, big or little. That rearaty also shows up when you research the model.

Thanks for the input,

I also like having the underexposed planes out here. I have a number of them that I know for a fact I am one of the only people on the planet that has one!

I remembered seeing a yellow bearcat somewhere, does that ring a bell for anyone? I will hunt around and see what I can find.

Thanks again

Greg

Greg-

Check out Squadron/Signal Publications "in action" series - I'm sure they have a Bearcat issue. They always have some nice 3-view line drawings and at least a couple pages of very nice color profile shots - usually showing 6 or 7 standard paintjobs and a couple interesting versions. They have tons of detail photographs and illustrations.

A great resource, and my LHS sells them for less than ten bucks. Well worth the money.

They don't have a Bearcat issue. It was of course one of my first checks, as they are nice like you said.

Yes they do, Ed; I have a copy. And has Pete said, the Bearcat issue does have pretty good panel line detail. I'd check with Squadron Signals in Carrollton to see if it's available. The one possible problem is that they sometimes take important titles out of print for a while and then release them again a couple of years later. For example, for some time, you could not get their book on the B-29. Huh?!?

Greg,

Glad to hear you're happy with my rendition of the "Jelly Bean". For a relatively obscure fighter, that plane sure attracts interest.

Bearcats forever!

Greg,
Thanks for the 3 views! They'll come in handy. My Bearcat is in the final stages of primer right now. Going with a final coat of white primer tomorrow to reduce the amount of gloss white that I am going to apply in the final finish. Sorry guy's. It's not going to be finished in the warbird motif. I have a new paint scheme that I will be doing it in. I'll let you all see it when it's done. I'll thimk you'll like it.

Jim,
Many thanks for a wonderful and IMO easy kit to assemble. Great parts fit and easy to understand directions. It is definitely a builders kit. Lot's of work but the end result is well worth it.

Seems like you have what you need by now but it might also be worth your while to check out your library for Christopher Chant's Super Profile publication for the Grumman F8F Bearcat (ISBN0 85429 447 3). It's not a very comprehensive book by modern standards - published in 1985 by Haynes Publications- the car manual people.

It does however have a couple of photographs of other colour schemes than the ubiquitous Navy Blue including a nice colour one of the Gulfhawk G-58A in strikingly bright orange, white and black and a pretty all silver F8F-1 of the Royal Thai Air Force.

Let me know if you are interested - I believe it is out of print.

cheers

Brian

You guys are a great help. Rudderman, I may email you about some glassing questions if you dont mind. I have the wing fully glassed now, but still need to put the second "wipe-off" coat on both sides, then primer it. I am going to try and finish the fuse and tail blocks tonight so I can get them glassed. It will give me something to do after the wing dries.

I am considering doing the yellow beetle bailey color scheme, something a little different.

Thanks again,

Greg

Jim-

Squadron Signal themselves told me over the phone they didn't print the F8 Bearcat book anymore but a re-release may happen again in the future. I checked all over to find a used copy but to no avail. I got the data I needed somewhere else!

Greg,
You can email me directly anytime for glassing questions or paint info. FYI, I used to be a decorative painter at Boeing where my job was to paint all Boeing 737 rudder assemblies with the customer colors. I also had a hand in painting some of the jets as well. I also had a custom body shop and did some kool kar paint jobs. But now I relegate all my painting to my model planes. The Bearcat is going to have a double throwdown finish on it. You'll see!

I do know a bit about glassing and Jim's methods are right on key. That's the glassing method I use on my planes and scale ships. Although I use a heavier cloth on the ships. On the Bcat, I use the .06 oz Dan Parsons cloth.

Greg, Email me tonight!

Rudderman, I like the sound of a double throwdown finish!
