Run-Off-Grass Speed 400?

Any suggestions for a speed 400 plane that can run off grass? Geared setups are possible, but long run times are DEFINATELY wanted. The 5 minutes that I get with my zagi are not enough.

I have 500ARs (7 and 8 cells) and 800ARs (8 cells). It would be nice to be able to use these if possible.

Thanks,
Ben C

Perhaps if the grass your are thinking about is a putting green.

Most planes that ROG need large diameter wheels to negotiate grass. Probably too heavy for a S400 plane.

Try pavement instead. This is definitely doable.

My Herr Aqua Star with a 6v S400, about 19 oz., would rise off frosty grass and snow. My ElectroScreamer (S400 EDF) would also take off from these as well.

I thought Andy had some video of his X-250 rog'ing off of grass. It looked liked it did very well.

I have 100+ flights with a Ferias ROG from a sports ground - definitely not a putting green - and a dozen with an X250. As long as the first two yards are relatively smooth, a geared 400 kite should lift off OK.

Anyone who can't ROG either has the wrong prop/gear/cells combo, or the plane is too heavy. Get a copy of Motocalc and play.

I have ROG'd a buddies Miss Europa off of grass. This was at a park with grass 1-2" long. It used a geared 6V SP400 and 8-1400AE cells.

I'd have thought that all the vintage-style geared S400 models (Miss 2, Miss Europa, etc.) would ROG happily ... but if you're currently flying a Zagi then they might not be quite what you're after?!

My trike u/c Twin Star ROGs off shortish grass without any problem using 8 cells. I set the flight timer to 10 mins (Sanyo 2400s).

The X250 is not available in the UK - buy it direct from Larry at SR Batteries - he will ship anywhere in very good packing. Mine arrived in about a week. There is an overhead in that you will have to pay duty and VAT, but, what the hell, you will be getting the best kit ever produced!

If you are looking for a slow / fast flying Speed 400 the Virus 400 from nesail.com leaps off thick grass in 3 feet. The wing loading is so small that it takes very little speed to get airborne. The 11 x 4.7 APC prop it comes with is great, but the gearbox is not the best (it has to be glued to the firewall to prevent vibration).

Wow, everyone, thanks for the responses!

I would get an X250 then. Either that, or a Twinstar.
