You will Have to post some pictures of the new motor setup when you get it done.. Did you build your kan 1/3A 1050 pack or purchase it somewhere?

I bought the pack, but there's a ton of sources for those. I'll post some pics when it's done. I have to rewind the motor. it's too hot for the soarstar. it'll rip it apart. I'd rather get longer flight times anyways.

well, I rewound the motor and took the soar star out yesterday. It was amazing. still don't have any pics but it did fly vertical! not the best thing for the plane but It was still a ton of fun! flight times were great even in the cold!

One of the problems I found with my Soarstar was wieght. It flies much better with 9 or 10 oz. taken off. Smaller RX gear will help but put a GWS IPS system on it with a LIPO batt, better yet with a brushlees motor or an outrunner motor. Yes, I know much more money, but you can fly it in closer and very slow, even indoors. Less wieght also means less damage on impact.

my outrunner I built weighs about 1/2 as much as the stock motor and gearbox. It spins the same prop and puts out 2oz more static thrust and uses more than an amp less current. it does fly well with a smaller battery. I have a 4/5th AAA pack that it just floats around with. you can fly circles around yourself and just reach out and pick it out of the air. I must get it indoors!

I broke down and went cheap. Got a new 400 motor on an impulse buy.

That is up from the 380 stock. cost was $15 and it put the power set up to just over stock when it was new. Flys great now. Gets out over the trees without making any passes around the baseball field. Just wish I would have gotten a 480...and that brushless sounds good too.

Really enjoying it now

the 400 was a good move, with this plane, lighter is better. I was even tempted to try a nice geared 300 with the lighter pack. for $15 it gets you in the air with a little more performace. can't go wrong with that.

Has anyone gone lipo on a soarstar with the stock motor? The lipo 3s 1500mah pack weighs 5 oz less than the pack (9.6v A sized 1100mah) that I am using now. Next question is would the stock motor handle the extra voltage?

the extra voltage, if applied frequently, will cut down the life a bit of your speed 400 but what the hell, they're cheap. What's the total weight with camera?

juki48,

I just finished putting together a SoarStar and would like to know if the CG is actually supposed to be as far back as the little booklet says.

That's almost exactly half-way the cord of the wing. Usually it's about 1/3 the cord on most planes.

Thanks,
Jim

Thanks Zeek,
Just thought it might be a mistake and didn't want to make that first launch with a great big surprize coming my way.

I also hand launch my Soarstar each and every flight. It can get real squirrelly on the ground if there is any wind at all.. I just give it half throttle and give her a toss.
