Hawk vs. AVA at Mid-South...

Brian, Alan:

Looks like the gauntlet has been thrown. Alan, you and Tommy need to be ready to whip up on those AVA's at Mid-South, and there will be lots of them. I know "Bubba" has one, Jon Stone has one, Charlie Waller has one, Buddy Roos has one, Brian of course and I believe Tim Logan owns the other one. Brian, correct me on that if I am wrong.

Below is a picture of the AVA's at the NASF fall contest last year.

I got a secret weapon.. A Yardbird.

With so many AVA's, it will definately come down to pilot skill and maybe a little luck....

I better keep practicing those landings. That may be the only tie breaker.

Yardbird

Thanks AJ..I Read thru the Y.B. thread.. Sounds-Looks good..I like that one "of" also..hence the Cop-The Half-Breed-Avagea-The 12 Gauge...
I had to chuckle about one person mentioning building one for $200..Barry sold me my last Ava for $660 and free shipping..A big difference from $200, but if I built a Houston hawk or Yard Bird myself, and paid myself $2.00 per hour I'd have over $4000.00 in it and it would not look near as nice as your Y.B. Ha Ha..I look forward to seeing the Y.B. at the Mid-South..Thanks..Brian

I guess if everyone is flying an AVA, it's going to win by default... I guess the age of model BUILDING is just about dead... I'm glad I didn't miss it. Having others fly my designs is probably the biggest compliment I could be paid. I'm glad I didn't miss that one, too.

One note about placing hi at Mid-South, I was 3rd in RES and 8th in open in 2002, flying a Legionair of all things. Alas, I've answered the call of 8-knot thermals, cloud streets, and 100-knot cruise... only to have a torn tendon screw me out of most of my summer fun, real or model... My only hope is to be well enough for the Labor-Day Lap Races at TSA, if they have them.

Jack;

Would you mind listing the R/C glider designs you have come up with?

My designs

Well, I've designed 10 or 12 gliders, starting in '77 when I did the Magic Carpet for Johnnie Casburn to kit, though he never did... The most notable is the Houston Hawk. Alan Jones is flying the Yardbird that I drew up and built most of...There was the RESMonster 153 and the RESPECT 100, which I built and flew.

The Hawk is most notable because of why it was done. Many of my club's members came to the back of my truck to see what new bird would emmerge. They seemed to lack the confidence to try to build anything, so I taught them with the Hawk. It's performance was a plus, though not totally unexpected. I was amazed at how much of my time was consumed with it, but it was worth it.

Jack,
yes the art of cutting and sanding wooden pieces has all but disappeared in this country. There are even posts of "expert building services" to basically install the servos... I have owned a couple of moldies and you dont "build" anything on them.. Just glue in the servos and try not to cut out too much of the nose section for the batteries.

I really like the design of the Hawk and I think I will start one right after the yard bird. someday I will find my photos of my scratch built eliptic dihedral LARS glider!!! That was a project and a half!!! But it flew and looked way to cool in the air

I'm really regretting not being at Woodcrafter's. I would have really enjoyed it. I was lured away by a regional full-scale contest. I am actually not getting to do either of these contests, this year. I'm still young and I'll be around for a long time, so don't count me out.....

The Houston Hawk Project-Part 2

Attached are pictures of my new Houston Hawk. I built it using a Janco model short kit with the following modifications: 1/2" wing rod from HiLaunch.com, servos for each spoiler, hooked tooth skeg from Super Skegs and a built up super stab from Ed Whyte. Have not flown it as yet - just had to show off the finished product. Shredderman sure designs a great looking airplane! Looking forward to my first flight soon.

Nice!

You're gonna like the performance of this ship...

I been looking at those stabs from Ed Whyte and they look pretty good..

What is your flying weight?
