Mini Mustang feasibility study

Fiddlersgreen has released a wonderful collection of racing mustangs for the paper folding crowd. The artworkis very well done.

I sure would like to convert one of these little gems to R/C. Here are my calculations.
Let me know if this seems feasible. I am not expecting a "floater".

Airframe 110# card stock fusalage, 67# tail feathers & canopy. single surface underchambered foam or clear acetal wing with printed condenser paper artwork applied.
Weight approx. 24 grams.

Blue arrow reciever 4 grams
Blue arrow servos 2x 8 grams
Blue arrow ESC 6 grams
Motor 7 grams
2 cell Lipo 11 grams

Approximate flying weight 60 grams (2.1 oz)
Wing area extended to approx. 35 in-sq
Wing loading approx 8.2 oz sq-ft

Which motor would be appropriate? Could it fly? Wanna Race?

That sounds very heavy. I had the same thoughts but using their J-3 Cub. I put the model together and came up with an airframe and motor weight of 5 grams. My hope is to add micro electronics and actuators to get an AUW of about 15 grams. Even at that weight I figured it would be tough to make it fly.

switch to 3-4mm depron or the core of FoamCore poster board (succesfully used for park flyer size planes- if you go smaller, use smaller depron or wall insulation foam) and use the fiddlers green sheet as a template.

There are lots of people that have done this in the foamies forum. Do a search for fiddlers green. You won't get the sweet paint job though unless you transfer that too- I recommend "PermOpaque" markers for depron- nice light opaque dye, foam-safe, and not as heavy as paint pens.

If you're not into foam, you can transfer them to thin contest balsa if you don't mind steam bending. you can print the FG plan directly to the balsa if you have the right kind of printer with a straight-thru feed.

look for the HE-111 thread ..LARGE paper model converted, looks great, flys nice ( and he has done Corsair and Stuka)

I want to scale up the fiddlersgreen cub can this be done at Kinkos or some printing shop like that?
I really would like to print it on some kind of thin plastic transfer film and stick that to .125 depron foam.
sure would make for a cool large park flyer wouldn't it?

Hi all,

yes, I've already bought the Mustang plans, too!

Here is my Tri Pacer. I have used 2mm wall foam (styrofoam), covered with printed tissue. The wing and tail are made from 1mm balsa. The model is shown shortly before finishing, but has flown well in the meantime, although I've had problems with the PU04 drive.

I have scaled up the plans using features of my printer driver (HP940C).

weight 17g ready to fly
span 330mm (peanut size)
DIY IR receiver
homemade actuators
PU04 drive
90mAh lipo cell
