4 meter Duo Discus install and fly

Hi Folks,

I just got this sailplane this weekend and plan on documenting my equipment installation and hope to get a few pointers from the "pros" on here as this is my first scale sailplane and first aerotow ship...

What torque servos would you recommend for the tow release and retract? I have a friend that recommends 100 oz torque servos here...

How about the elevator? It looks like an HS 85 size servo is the only thing that will fit in the rudder.

Attached are a few pics...

Jeff,
Great looking sailplane. Fantastic cockpit detail. Which manufacture is it? Looking forward to your install.

If you use the pin in a sleeve tow release, a standard servo will do it .
There is normaly no load on the Servo.
Cheers
Thomas

I would look into putting a Hitec wing servo in the tail for the elevator-- for a 4 meter ship-- I wouldn't trust the HS85's torque-- the wing servo should be thin enough to fit right in-- and get more for the wings too! IMHO

Use the biggest servo you can fit.........strange things can and do happen during towing.......you want positive release every time....this is what I use....strong...and inexpensive!

I've used HS-85MG+ servos in the elevators of comparable gliders and they work just fine. Just be sure to use the MG (metal gear) versions. Yes, there is a very small amount of gear play, but these servos just don't strip. And for tow release, a strong servo is a must for guaranteed release every time.

Thanks for the tips guys...

Here's what I ordered:

JR DS3421 for the elevator
JR 2721 for the tow release
JR 2721 for the retract
JR 531 for rudder
JR DS368 for ailerons
JR 341 for spoilers
10 channel PCM dual converson Rx

It's a little easier on the wallet to order really good radio equipment when you don't have to spend $600 on a motor / gearbox / ESC! :-)

I also ordered extensions with chokes inline for my aileron and elevator leads...Do you guys use them?

The 2721 outputs 120 oz. of torque at 4.8 volts. I could not go with a 1/4 scale size servo as it would eliminate the ability to use the scale cockpit.

Had a chance to start installing equipment in the Duo this weekend.

Here's a pic of the JR 2721 servo installed on the tow release line:
