Rough & Ready Aviation Fokker D VII

I have a couple friends locally that are putting together a kit for Depron Fokker D VII biplane. I'm building a pre-production kit. Mine came with all the parts and hardware, wheels, syringe to apply epoxy, etc.

Wings, ailerons, and cabanes are 6mm depron.

Tail is 3mm depron.

Fuse is 3 layers of 6mm depron (preassembled).

Here's the depron parts:

Here I've got the elevater halves epoxied together with a CF rod. Also glued the landing gear mounting plates (plywood) to each side of the fuse. Note that the fuse is 3 layers of 6mm depron. The middle layer has spaces for routing wires inside. It comes already assembled with routed openings for receiver and battery.

Now have the elevater hinged to the horizontal stab and the rudder hinged to the vertical. Uses small mylar strips (included) that are foam-safe CA'd into slots. Ailerons also hinged and control horns installed. Servo mounting plates epoxied onto fuse side. Note the control rod tubes mounted in the fuse. Comes that way in the kit. Both top and bottom wing are preslotted for carbon fiber rods (included).

Comes with very nice stamped aluminum landing gear. Wheels, threaded rod, and nuts included. Also you can see here the two threaded long hex nuts that are preinstalled in the front of the fuse for mounting the motor.

Closeup of the very simple but effective motor mount. That's a Himax 2808-0980 brushless outrunner. Fits an AXI 2208/34 nicely too.

All assembled. AUW with Tanic 3s 830 pack = 12.2 oz. Balanced perfectly with this setup:

Receiver: Polk Micro Seeker 6
Servos: MX-30 (4)
Motor: Himax 2808-0980
ESC: Phoenix-10
Battery: Tanic 3s 830 Lipoly


Small crosses and lines are SIG 1/8" and 1/4" trim tape. Large white bands are Solite. Crosses on top wing are the rudder decals from a slowstick kit.

Thanks. I have to credit the designers. It's a very quick and easy build.

What size prop are you going to run with that setup?

We recommend an APC 9x3.8 SF. This keeps the current in the 8 amp. range which is ideal for the motor, ESC, battery combination. The Fokker D VII will fly vertical with ease and yet because of it light wing loading (5 oz/sq.ft.) will also fly very slowly. Landings are a snap.

There is some sort of reinforcement to the nose where the motor is screwed in, right? Depron isn't much good for holding screws...

Hmm. If you look at post #4, it looks like there are a couple of threaded inserts imbedded in the foam.
