Question
Mini-IFO, 1524 and Qualcomm 830's

Any one flying the 1524 and ARC-1 with the Qualcomm LiIons?

I'm wondering what kind of perfomance to expect with 2 and 3 cells? Vertical?

Seems like 3 cells would be around 2.8 ounces, is this too heavy for this plane? Thanks!

I fly a mini IFO with a 1717 and three of the small Tadiran (430ma) cells. They weigh 33 gms (just over one ounce). I think your plane will fly but the performance will be not up to par. Those cells would be fine on the regular IFO. I would try a small NiMh pack 6-10 cells.

Hi Jordan,

That was quick!

I'm currently using the NiMH 120's 8 and 10 cell packs. I haven't been getting good performance out of them, since my Super Nova keeps false peaking on them. I'm building the trickle charger here on Ezone so I can slow charge them.

I was just curious about the LiIons.

IFO

John,
I have a DC1717, 9cell 120mah NIMH, and braun prop. I can hang on the prop at about half throttle for the first couple of minutes. After that it's about 3/4 to full throttle.

We are flying tonight 7-10 instead of tomorrow night. I'm hoping there won't be as many people tonight since it's on a Thursday. Maybe I will come up there tomorrow night if my IFO makes it through tonight,

DC1717

On Todds Models web page, he shows the DC1717 to have about 4-5 grams more thrust than the DC1524 on the same amount of cells. The DC1717 weighs 2.4 grams less then the DC1524. You should be ok with vertical performance with the DC1524. I barely ever go above 1/2 throttle when flying around.

Craig, how are you charging those 120's ?

I have a SuperNova, but I can never seem to get them to take more than 50-75 mAh.

I'm going to build the trickle charger here on Ezone

Also, how did you mount your 1717?

Is that a light on the front of your IFO?

I use a Graupner MC Ultra Duo Plus II charger. For mounting the motor I took the motor mount from the Tiny. I then drilled a hole for the carbon rod to go through. And then you can cut some off of the mount. I then Ca'd the mount on the carbon rod. Then mount the motor with the two screws. It works great. I busted the mount before I busted where it glues on. At first I just Ca's the motor on, but it was allways coming off. Hope this helps.

The 1717 is a hotter (higher kv) motor so it gives more rpm per volt. But it's a little less efficient than the 1524.

I use the 1524 with 28x12 prop on 9x50 nicds on my Mini IFO, and the same motor/prop on a Stubenfliege ... which needs less power so normally flies on 8x120 nicds.

For the motor mount on the Mini IFO, I cable-tied the motor to a small piece of 1/64 ply (maybe 1" x 0.5"), added triangular section balsa strip each side to give a flat base then cyano'd it to the plate on the airframe. It has never moved, and if I want to take the motor off one day I just cut the cable ties.

AUW of the Mini IFO with 9x50 is 112g.

Hope the description is OK, if not I can shoot a pic. tonight & post.

I'm still waiting for WES Technik to release their small Li Ion packs ... I checked a couple of days ago and not ready yet The delay is getting the protection circuits amended to be more suitable for r/c use (bearing mind we are using BEC!).

Craig: I get it. Is the the mount listed as the 1524 and 1717 motot mount on Toddmodels.com?

Bill: It sounds like I mounted mine the same way you did originally. Sort of a 'T' shaped mount. Problem is, I proke it a couple times, now it's next to impossible to keep it on, so I have to build a new mount. I like the way Craig did his.

Thanks for all the other info, you've been very helpful in my selection of components for the Mini. now, if I could just get these 120's to take a proper charge. I have a 10x50 NiCd pack comeing in the mail soon, so we'll see how that one works.

I broke down and ordered the set of 830's from Hacketts. My Dad has a Mini-IFO with the GWS-A setup and I knew they worked well, so I'm going to split them with him and I have another pland I can use them in.

You could download the plans for the Tiny and copy the motor mount. Yes it is the same one that Todd Shows.
