SS V Tail vs Inverted V Tail

What are the advantages / disadvantages between the standard V Tail and the Inverted V Tail when applied to the Slow Stick???

* Inverted V has pro-verse roll instead of ad-verse roll, and so will turn better. Pitch control will be identical.

* Inverted V will hang lower than upright V, and so be more suceptible to landing damage.

* It's harder to work out the control linkage on the inverted V, especially if it's mounted high to avoid the problem of hanging low.

That's the main points- I can think of a few others but they get esoteric and of little importance very quickly.

I think inverted V-tail is great for pushers with dual tailboon designs, where it advantages are:
  • Better turns
  • Self alignment construction
  • Very resistent due to the distribution of forces as compression/distension along the tail
  • Easy to link with a pair of control links inside the tail boons
  • The tail and prop are safe even in inverted landings

Since I started with these designs I never broke a propeller again

But in conventional models like SS this tail design break very easly.

I too am interested in an inverted v tail. does anyone know of a kit for this design like the model pictured above?

Alescmag, what do you call it your plane?

I call it "Aerosonde", because it was inspired in the AeroSonde UAV (http://www.aerosonde.com).

Actually there are two models. The red one was the first prototype and the second was the current one. The changes are only in weight and some fuselage and link optimizations.

Both are built in 4 hours with depron sheets, EPS block and two fiberglass tubes from fishing sticks (???) (sorry, I don't know the english name for the 2,4m telescopic sticks used for fishing).

This is my favorite model, fast enough to fly slope soaring or windy days, slow enough to fly in a park, stable enough to answer the cell phone while flying and has a turn radius of less then 4m. Wingspan is 120cm and weight is 550g-600g with a GWS EM400 motor, GWS 5x3 prop and a 200g Saft 1500mAh 9,6V Battery Pack.

I can send building plans for these model, if you want.

I don't know any names, but I've seen several kits with a similar configuration, both with and without power. The twin boom design is far and away the best setup for an inverted V.

BTW, the word you're looking for is "Fishing Rod" (-: I have a pod-and-boom sailplane made from a fishing rod myself...

Thanks for the "fishing rod". It is my favorite material for boons and wing spars, becausa it is strong, light and cheap.

This is another layout for inverted V. I call it Wplane or AMplane

alexcmag == how's about giving the details of your plane, looks interesting, would like to try building one...

How did you make the wings, size agnle of tail etc.

The AeroSonde (first two pictures) is:
  • 118cm wingspan
  • 22cm wing chord
  • 76cm length
  • 550g-600g weight
  • powered by GWS EDP400 (Mabuchi 370, 6x3 prop). Can fly with 5x3 prop too
  • 200g 9,6V NiMh battery pack (I have Panasonic 1100mAh and Saft 1400mAh)
  • The 15 degree polyedral wing is very stable and easy to control even on stall speed
  • The 100 degree inverted V tail has good handling as elevator and rudder.
This is very easy to build and to fly, can make tight turns and has a good soaring and can do level flight with with half power

The construction plan is in http://planeta.terra.com.br/lazer/Ae...aaerosonde.gif. Since I has no CAD software, the plan was made with paintbrush, with a 1mm/pixel resolution.

The Wplane (last picture) is:
  • 120cm wing span
  • 24cm wing chord
  • 70cm lenght
  • 500g weight
  • powered by the same motor and battery of Aerosonde
  • 120 degree inverted V tail
This is a parking lot flying wing, because is very easy to fly in small places.

Both plans are in portuguese, but since the most of words are measurements and equipment specification, they are very easy to understand.

I am a newbie both on RCgroups and on flight. I learned to fly alone, so both models are built to be very easy to fly, hard to break and keep the motor, propeller, engine, servo and electronics safe in crashs. I never broke a prop with these models, even after crashing a electric pole or the ground.

I don't know why (may the ISP can explain), but the plans can only be saved to disk. I tried to click on the links and got an error message.

Right-click and "Save to..." works.
