Ho 229

Here is the last picture of the Ho 229 without covering. She has been sanded down to 600 grit and the covering between ribs 2 and 3 have been prescored for easy removal after the first glide test.

She will first fly as an Ho 9 (Glider). I am using my own bell shaped lift distribution scheme and I need to see how it flies without power. Once we know it flies, we'll punch out the panels between ribs 2 and 3 and insert our ducting and EDF's. We should be ready to fly again the next weekend.

I am covering this wing with UltraCoat and I'll start tomorrrow evening.

Thanks again for all the input, feedback and ideas. Much appreciated.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

cool project, keep on posting!

If you’re interested in german wings-enthusiasts and their projects, just have a look at the Nurflügel-Team.

Maybe there are some ideas you can use in completing the Ho 229 - there are some pics to find on a 5-meter-Ho229 with jet engines (c „Story der H9 mit Düsen“)

Regards,

Andy

Bie,

Vielen Dank. Ihr Heim ist Deutschland. Haben Sie die Ho 229 Modelleflugzeuge gesehen?

Hi Jeff,

last year there was a giant scale Ho229 - of, I think, english origin - shown in static display at the Hamburg Model Fair. Impressive!

But I haven’t seen them flying.

There must be some video-sequences of a jet-powered Ho229 in flight in a video of the La-Ferté-Alais-Show in France, but I don’t know in which video (or which year) exactly it was. I’ve seen only short outtakes of it.

I look forward to see your EDF-Ho229 fly...

Regards,

Andy

I received several emails on color choices for this prototype. I do appreciate all of the feedback I have received on this project. I find it to be helpful and enjoy seeing this project through other people's eyes.

This prototype will be covered with Cub Yellow UltraCoat with cobalt blue stripes. I do this is for visibility on video during flight testing. I load the videos on a workstation and perform analysis on adverse yaw, dutch roll and pitch stability. I count yaw oscillations, time and distance for stall recovery, measured distance airspeed and other specifics that help me determine flight characteristics. The skies above my location are not always clear and blue and I need a color that will not blend in with the sky or reflect the sky's color. The bright color and dark stripe breaks up the aircraft's shape and stands out against our mostly cloudy skies

If this Ho 229 flies successfully, I am going to build a slightly larger one for Toledo 2005 and it will painted as an operational Ho 229 may have been painted in WWII.

I think with your scientific approach to this project, there is no need for an If.

Andy,

I appreciate your encouragement.

You mentioned flight videos of the twin turbine Ho 229. I downloaded these from a website and for some reason I cannot find the URL. I'll do some more searching later today and most the URL. They are beautiful.

I heard that this particular Ho 229 went down (crashed) about two months ago. Have you heard this?

Best regards,

Jeff

Jeff,

would love to see the videos - but can’t watch wmv-files on my Mac...

No, I didn’t hear of a crash of the Ho229...

Andy

'Twas the night before maiden......

Almost finished with the Ho 229. I am attaching the elevons this evening and I will balance the aircraft tomorrow afternoon.

The weather does not look good tomorrow with wind gusts up to 35 MPH. Monday looks much better. We'll play it by ear tomorrow. Video and still pictures will be up shortly after we get back from the field....if it flies.

More updates tomorrow. Pictures of the completed H0 229 will be posted in the next 24 hours.

Best regards,

Jeff

Ho 229

Here is the Ho 229 configured as the Ho 229 V1 (glider) without the canopy. The canopy is in the hangar drying.
