Molt/Mountain P-38 mods

Well, here's my M&M P-38...

My first mod is to backdate the nacelles to the E through H version. I just like the sleeker look of the early P-38's better. I made new formers for positions 1, 2 & 3 and replaced the forward portion of the lower keels. I also cut new cowl formers.

My next mod was to make the landing gear removable.

For the mains, I added some 1/16" ID brass tubing where the gear plugs, added a strip of brass for the gear anchor, and reinforced the entire area. I silver soldered a small brass tab to the main gear and used a piece of split brass tubing to silver solder the small music wire gear retainer to the gear leg.

I just have to slide the small wire a bit to the side and the gear slides off.

The nose gear is made from 1/16" ID & 3/32" ID brass tubing and 1/32" thick brass stock. The catch works similar to the ones on the mains.

Very clever. I hope it looks as good covered as it does naked.

The P-38 looks great. Do you have any drawings or sketches of the modified formers, or just some messurements. Because I'm going to make the English evaluation version wich was a D version.

Here's the parts layout in AutoCAD 2000 format. If you need a DXF file let me know.

Awesome work Joel! I think your modifications to make the landing gear removable is a work of art. It will look much more streamlined than the stock version with your nose of the booms all shaved down. Excellent work, bring on more pics!

Metro :

Looks wonderful - the undercarriage work is amazing. Keep us up to date with pics as your build progresses. What colour scheme are you going for? Glacier Girl?

Nice work. I like the more streamlined cowls on the early 38's also. My favorite is the XP-38, which is even more streamlined.

The gear work is fabulous. I wish I had the skill to do that type of work.
