CHARYBDIS, or the single bladed helicopter thingee...

Here's a link to something in the FREE FLIGHT threads.

It's a Free Flight "nearly" helicopter thingee from 50 years ago. They really work- I've seen them.

With all this phenominal cosmic power and the weights of small electrics and lithium batteries, I would love to see someone make a small, RC (throttle only?) version, if not a free flight version of this thing.

I bet you could make one with a pager motor and a piece of fanfold foam. Even if it were just throttle, it should still be a hoot.

They were desinged for a COX .010 nitro
I actually think they would work better and smoother in electric version.

Anyone out there gonna give it a go?
How about an all up, last down contest?

This thread has a link to the full sized plans in PDF form-

Here's a simplified drawing of the beast.

Here are 2 pics that people have shared of this unusual craft.

One is nitro, submitted by tim hooper and the other is JETEX, from http://www.jetexsystems.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Models.htm

These things are so cool. I love the shape of the JETEX one. Just like a "seedpod" or a feather.

Has anyone else got photos of this type of craft?

It would seem someone has already been playing with an electric R/C version-

scroll to the bottom of the page for an electric rc version:

here's a movie of a rocket powered model:

This fellow, Ron Jesme (rj59@aol.com) is pretty intense- he is building a magnetic directional tool and hopes to have one full axis steerable soon. The pictures I post here come from his webpages and from his club's. I found them by following the link above.

This is really a neat project, anyone else?
