Chris, sorry to hear about your friend. I'd love to see those pics especially ones of the tail section.

Have a look at my page on model sharks ![]() I was trying to get in touch with Nick Burge about "Dennis" - truth be told, I was rather hoping, probably beyond hope, to acquire the shark, or at least some tips on how to build one like it (I had envisaged one as big as six feet!! ), but as I've said my building and design skills are somewhat limited, hence this easier (in my opinion) wooden prop-and-rudder shark.Sorry to hear that Nick has passed on, though. ![]() I, personally, would love to see more photos of "Dennis" when you can get them. Himszy I'm using a prop (well, two) sticking out of the underside, near the tail. |

DDM.
Nice shark site. Now on my favourite list!! Well, I have to clear the workbench a bit as with the Surcouf, Type VII, & an Akula on it at the moment it is, err, somewhat crowded! I will get 'Dennis' in the very near future and see how he has survived for the last three years or so of inactivity. Must be a few wires suffering the dreaded black wire syndrome etc. As soon as I can I will post pics and as I strip it down will post interior shots if needed etc. |

Glad you like - obviously the site is still being worked on whenever I get new updates - there'll eventually be a lot more in it, however. Once I get "Bruce" built, it'd be good to see the two of them in the water!

"Bruce"! I always think of the Monty Python sketch when I hear the name Bruce. The one where all the Aussies are called Bruce and keep going on about "No pooftahs"
Nick also made a Dolphin (Delores!) with tail moving up and down along with the jaw drop, illuminating eyes, vertical water spouter, sound beeper etc. That is now looking a little the worse for wear on Nicks storage shelves, but was great non the less. Shares space with a flash steam turbine sub too. Yeah, Nick was a great engineer and crazy too. Brilliant combination. It may be of interest to you that I have a fairly long video of a lot of Nicks models performing on/in his purpose built test area (ie swimming pool size), even down to depth charges and the like on type VII's. Some of the video from the surface while other shots are from his special perspex camera pit that gives all the underwater shots too. That damn shark looks so realistic (I scuba dived with them in the Bahamas and Maldives etc) it's amazing how realistic it is. Good luck with it all YOUR projects! My friend wanted to build a shark, and we got as far as the plans.
Our difficulties were with the tail. I had designed it similar to "Dennis's". However everyone kept telling us that we needed powerful stepper motors and control circuits to get it to move. It is great to see that someone figured out a simple method to make it work. When you are up to collecting "Dennis", I would love to see more images on how he works, and the control system for the tail. Umi. |

Would there be any chance of getting to see this video? My primary interest is the shark, of course, but it'd be interesting to see anyway ![]() I knew he'd built a dolphin - I even have that article, too! When I first started researching how to do a shark, I got in touch with Marine Modelling International (back in 2002) who told me about the dolphin article - but no sharks!! Strange that, as "Dennis" was a couple of years after the dolphin! I was fortunate enough to meet a guy in Edinburgh who has built some subs, including a U-boat of some sort (I think it's a type VII) that was built the same way as I'm doing for "Bruce" - a good omen!! I'm sure we can collect Dennis soon and 'gut' him so to speak!
As to the videos DDM, I'm certain we can arrange for a copy etc to wing its way northwards for cost etc. Bread and butter construction is the chosen method for the 'Krick' U-25 kit that has it for the lower half of the hull construction. Top half is an ABS type moulding. The kit is now incredibly expensive in UK for what it is, but one kit went on Ebay recently (unopened) for 105 ukp. Umi Watch this thread for future pics of Dennis's internals OK? |

Let me know what costs are and I'll send you my address ![]() Not sure what kind of U-boat Andrew has - may well be a Krick one, as I seem to recall the top decks being somewhat flimsy - may well have been a plastic of sorts. I'm currently thinking of building a smaller version of Bruce - about 1/12th scale, which would make him 25" long....!! |

OK, here's a bit of an update.
Here's the body so far, made from layers of 10mm balsa. (For being made out of balsa, it weighs a helluva lot!) The rubber shark in the background of this shot is 29" long.... |

Have already done so, but work on a 210BHP engine rebuild for my Caterham Seven (Lotus 7 ala "Prisoner". 0-60mph = 4.1 secs) is taking up what little time I have available at present.
I WILL post info as soon as I get the time. Promise. This w/e the engine is hopefully going to run so that'll be a weight off my mind! Just got to fit the head, throttle bodies etc. On a less than happy note, Dennis has suffered a bit and needs a little work to repair external damage. Those dorsal fins MUST be made easily removeable as they are far too vulnerable to transit damage as is. |

That's one problem I thought of for my "Bruce" - I thought of simply clamping the piano-wire down onto the fins, and then screwing them down - easy to take off to avoid getting bashed. The tail, however...!
