What Nimh battery pack should I get for my Skat to get long flights?

On skat #2 i want to use another pack instead of my 8x600ae so I can get longer flights with it. What is the biggest nimh pack I can get for the longest running time that will fit inside that small skat fusluge? I use a Permax 400BB and 5-5 graupner racing prop??

I don't know the fuse of the skat but the
only NiMh that will work on high current are Twicell 1600.

I use 8 of them in my Switchblade and Adrenalin on 6V motors with 9 Minutes full speed and yet another one to calm down

Load at max. 2A reflex.

But you'll get much better performance on 7 cells 700 AR though.

I don't know how big the fuse is as well, but I have been useing the Radio Shack 1600's in my Twister with great result. What kind of AMP draw do you see with the P400 BB. I have been useing the RS pack in my PJC with a 14 turn Colbalt that Pulls 17 AMPS static on this pack. I have to fly at reduces throttle but I do regularly get 9:30 flights on that set up. On the Twister I am getting a easy 12 mins. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Jim

The SkaT fuse is JUST wide enough to fit 2 500 or 600mAh cells side by side. You can go longer than the standard 7 cell 5/600 mAh pack, but not wider or taller. The SkaT has probably the smallest under-wing cross section of any of the S400 pylon racers. A race only takes ~80-90 seconds... why do you care about long flights?

A skat is a pylon racer, it is designed to go fast with minimum space. If you want longer flight, may be you should get a larger plane that carry a bigger electron tank.

I just wanted some more minutes out of my flights. Besides know sometimes i use a 8x1000nimh and it works good for 7 minutes and has good speed. But I still like the 8x600ae for fast flying.

Guys,

If you really want to get long flights in a sp400 racer that is going to be used for sport flying, then you would do well to consider the Astro 010 with either the on/off control or the Jeti that Astro is now selling with the 010.

On 8 cells and the advanced timing that the Jeti controller gives, the 010 does a convincing impression of a 6v Sp400. I did a lot of testing on a new 400 F5B of mine over the spring and really like this combo. 500AR's last 6-7min., 1100 NiM's last 15 min. These are full throttle times. Take also into account that you will see a loss in weight, making an even better sport plane.

The low current draw of the 010 would also allow you to use the 720 NiM cells. These are the same weight as 350 NiCds, and really tiny. A sub 11oz. racer is doable this way-makes for really slow landings.

If you can get around the mental block of not having a throttle, Specialized Model Supply is running a special on 010's with the original controller for $89. I flew my pylon racer at 15.5oz at one time with this setup on 1700AULs, it's not a disadvantage like you would think.

i have a couple of simple 400s that i love
to sport fly and the 600ae's dont last for crap... im not up to par with the brushless motors so any help or recomendations would be great... the local hobby shop has a 010 if you think it would fly a simple ill buy it.

I pretty much stick with the APC or Graupner CAM 4.7-4.7, but I have also flown a 5-3 glow prop for more and it was flyable if a little sedate.

The 010 will fly the heck out of a Simple 400, no sweat. If you get the motor with the Astro on/off controller(probably what your dealer has in stock) then stick to no more than the 4.7-4.7 prop and 7 cells unless you have a way to measure current. Any of the packs you already have should work ok.

I see that Hobby Lobby is now offering the Jeti-06 controller for $70.... Astro is selling these on their 010's(rebadged) for $120-130.

How fast will a Skat fly with an 010 compared to a 400 on 8x600ae?

Dont know about a scat, but my flea flies great on a 12t 010, jeti 18amp bl and a 4.7x4.7 apc on 7 cells (about 70 watts into a 13 oz plane). I like the 12t because of a bunch of 7 cell 600ae and 500ar packs I have, and duration is in the 8-10 min range. I am thinking of trying the schulze18 be as test indicate higher effecentcy at partial thottle. I do not think it would be a good idea to run WFO at 70 watts as the motor only weighs 30 grams and heats up pretty quick.

Ryan-
We sell packs that are composed of the high quality Twicell Sanyo 1600 NIMH AA cells. The 8 cell packs are on sale for $24 right now with high quality silicone leads. I use them in my Speed 400/480 applications. They weigh a little more than 600AE packs, but greatly increase the duration.

I don't think they'll fit in the SkaT's small fusluge.
