There isn't much you can do except go seperates. A high frequency tail ESC will give back the tail motor life. With that aside, using a tail motor with carbon brushes is the only real thing you could do. I have also found that cutting my main blades reduced the strain on my tail motors, but that may also cause other issues with lift, etc.
DD will draw more current than the geared tail motor setup, so I recomend sticking with the gears for right now.
