Brushless suggestions for PC9

Guys,
I have an Awesome Models PC9 plane. It currently has a Wattage 400 size cobalt motor in it. Using NiCd batteries at the moment due to current draw (20 - 27 Amps).

What I would like to know is does anyone have any suggestions for a better brushless type powerplant? (I am using a JustGoFly 400DH in a Zoom heli at the mo' and it is cool). I would really like to run this thing on LiPo, but the current draw really restricts the packs that can be used. I also don't want to have to pay more for the battery than the plane is worth!

Thanks

Tony

Tony,
you could look at something from the mega 16/15 range sp480 size motor.

16/15/5 8cells 7x4 prop 12500rpm@16A
or
16/15/7 8cells 8.5x5 prop 9600rpm@11.3A

Or I am sure that one of the Himark brushless motors would work too.

Chris,
Thanks for that...any idea of the KV rating onthe motor (Himark)? also would it be a 2025 or a 2015 can size?

Those currents sound much more like it...I should even be able to use my LiPo's from my Zap for the whole shebang!

cheers

well the himax 2025 4200 geared at 5.33:1 would be a very good option also e-flite has its park 400 brushless both of which are drawing around 11amps wot.

Odd that you don't mention the 16/15/6. It works well with the APC 8x4 at around 16A static on a second-generation TP2100, as well as on 8 cells.

One thing to consider is that the Wattage cobalt 400 is heavy; if you replace it with a lighter motor/battery setup, you may have CG issues.

Hey Bulletmaster - how sturdy is the PC9? I have been thinking about getting one and use Himax 4100 or 4200 geared in that Bad boy.. Thanks in advance

I used the UltraFly A24 motor in my PC-9, using a 8 x 6 APC-E on a 1,500 mA Kokam it was showing 102W on the Wattmeter. The model seems to more solid than the Hawk.

RC4,

The version that I have is not a foamie, but has a built up wing/tail feathers and a plastic fuse. Can't give you a flight report yet as it has been far too windy around here to give it a go. Don't really want to try this one out in the local park (where I fly my other slow flying things) so am really limited to flying at a local club field.

Actual build quality is very nice...covering is good and the graphics really make this a sweet looking plane.

Cheers

Bulletmaster,

My mistake but Thanks anyways. I should have read a little closer. Still interested
in the flight report though... I live in a valley area and it's pretty windy most of the times. Any maiden flight should be done without the pesky wind to ruin it...

Hi Tony. I've just swapped the standard cobolt motor and nicad bat over to a himark 20.15 4100 with a himax gearbox that came with 3 ratios (im using the middle sized gear .not sure what ratio it is) and 11.1v 2200 ma lipo pack. All i can say is WOW what a difference , level flight at just over 1/4 throttle and landings are so much slower, makes the little pc9 so much better in every way .after a 15 min flight doing loops rolls etc my charger only put 900mah to charge the bat again . worth every cent i reckon Thanks Chris

Chris...

thanks mate...great suggestions. Thanks to all that have put forward some ideas. I have also been given the suggestion of retaining the cobolt and using 2 packs in parrallel of 2000 LiPo's (2s1p). Might give this a go too.

cheers

Chris,( Trikky version .....lol)

Been too windy so far (plus went to Adelaide last weekend.... to play with model powerboats). So, still no flight time yet

This is my first aileron low winger (fine with helis, and 3 channel models). So, looking forward to giving it a fling.... Also got a scam-blur flying wing on it's way to me. So got lots of toys to crash!! (hopefully not!)

Will post flight report when I actually get the beast in the air!

cheers

Still no joy with a maiden flight...but had the scram-blur in the air. What a hoot....great fun. Fast and does rolls quite quickly. Guess I better get joined with a local club now that I have something that is a bit more respectable to fly with the nitro guys.

When will this wind ever STOP???
