Lite Stik
Tigermoth CrazyMax (back before there were E-Starters) Switchback okay that's four, but it's hard to stop. ![]() That was three years ago, since then I've aquired nineteen other planes, but... the Tigermoth and Switchback are still my favorites and they get more flight time than anything that's come after. Plane 1 - Midwest Aerolectric -> 3 months to build. 5 seconds to destroy.
Plane 2 - Goldberg Mirage 550 -> 2 months to build. Lasted atleast 6 years. Plane 3 - Great Planes Spirit -> Plane 3 may have also been a Davey Systems Stampe SV4 Biplane but the Spirit was completed first even if started second. |

First airplane, or first engine/motor powered plane, or first RC plane???
First plane: Probably ~1955 - hand-launched glider! Followed by a succession of increasingly more complex and larger gliders, but still only $2-$3 for materials - tossed off 600ft high volcanic summits in Auckland, New Zealand - several lost as they headed west across the Tasman Sea toward Australia (1200 miles away!). A few rubber powered free flight planes as well. First powered plane: 1962: Webra 1.5cc powered C/L trainer, followed by a succession of increasingly ferocious Oliver Tiger 2.5cc diesel powered C/L stunt aircraft. Culminated in a 100mph kerosene-fueled pulse jet, which trailed a 3ft exhaust flame (spectacular at dusk) and probably exceeded 100 decibels - no local park, or nearby resident, would let us continue. First RC plane: after a 35yr hiatus: Dynaflite Piece o' Cake (72") - with Cox .049 - now to be repowered with Graupner 600 or Phasor 15/4 brushless electric. Kadet Seniorita (54") - originally fitted with PAW 3.5cc Diesel, then an MVVS 2.5cc Glow - possible electric conversion. First Electric RC plane: Northeast Sailplanes EZ 400 (48") - still survives in 66" modified condition 3yrs on. Nanognat (36") - built from free plan - modified for Speed 300 instead of 280 from the get-go, still going strong. Scrappy (42") - built from free plan - modified from the get-go, originally for IPS, tried 300, now perfect with AXI 2208/34. As you may have discerned, I'm an old, cheap, balsa building, former diesel 2.5cc control-line guy! I now have about 15 aircraft, almost all from plans or kits, but including three Slow Sticks and a Carbon Falcon, mostly now with brushless motors - but I seem to spend more time testing motors, than building planes or flying them! Hmmmm. I dont usually like bringing up bad memories but i still enjoyed building and/or crashing my planes. Not one crash has made me dislike this hobby. I was and still am very fascinated by everything that makes these planes. Well anyway, heres the list.
Extra .35 yes i know. im an idiot. This got me about 3 minutes of stick time and loved every minute of it. .25 piper cub. Have yet to get this one to fly right. Something silly always goes wrong upon takeoff. Hd3D electric plane. This one actually flies and is awesome because i dont have to flick the prop at all Ive got too many flights on this to list.

Beeline Dr1 Miniflash The Miniflash and Dr1 are still intact. The tigermoth had a long life and the fuselage now resides on the wall. Jon |

1. ParkZone J3 Cub. Under repairs. Looks harmless but not a trainer.
2. Hobbico Sky Zap -fun to learn on, very easy and stable. 3. Eagle 2/ 0.46. Nice but don't get to enjoy it much since I need to hook up with someone until I know what I'm doing. Next planes: One or two from this list: Estarter, EasyStar, Sky Scooter Pro II, Ventura. |
