Lousy day for flying

My landings weren't too sharp at the Tullahoma contest last weekend so I
went out today to brush up on my landings. Didn't get as much done as I
had hoped. I joined Flying Brian, the Herb, Don Cleveland, and Charles
Bair at the Airfoilers field this morning but only got to practice 8
landings. Weather was clear with temperature 72 degrees and south wind at
5 mph. Every time I launched, I hit a booming thermal and the model was
out of sight overhead in a very few minutes. I was determined to practice
my landings and spent almost half the flights with full flaps trying to get
down. Just flying in strong thermals quickly becomes boring so on the last
flight I was determined to stay out of strong thermals and only took a
short to get around into the landing pattern. Alas, I hit a weak thermal
as I turned base. Working weak thermals at low altitude are a lot more fun
that struggling to keep the model low enough to see so I aborted the
landing and played with the weak lift until the model started to climb. The
best laid plans ....
