Contest -- best average flight time with SS and Aiptek SD camera.
In an effort to find the best setup for a "standard" or "beginner" AP setup (Slow Stick / Aiptek SD), I thought I'd post a contest to see who has the setup which allows for the longest flight time.
What's the prize, you ask? Simple -- bragging rights!
The rules are that your flight time must be with a GWS Slow Stick, and an attached Aiptek SD digital camera.
There's a nice web site for calculating these things, but I wonder how realistic those numbers are.
So, I'll start:
I get about 7 minutes on the following:
Motor: 400 Speed
Gearbox: "H" (5.28:1)
Battery: 8x KAN Ni-MH 1050 mAh

I'm expecting my Aiptek SD any day now, and I can't imagine that my flight times will change too radically.
With my SS set up exactly as follows, I have actually flown, nonstop, for 41 minutes!
When I get the camera, I will post the actual times aloft with the extra 2 oz of weight.
Here is my SS info
Park 370 BL
Castle Creations Phoenix 10 ESC
2 cell Li-Ion 18650 pack (7.2V / 2000mah)
2-Hitec HS-55 servos
Carbon fiber tube strut (3/16") on top side of main wing
Carbon fiber rod (1/8") on leading edge of horiz. stab
7 Channel full size reciever (waiting for my FMA M-5 to arrive)
Himax Blue anodized, heat sink "D" gearbox
Oak fuselage extender shaped to provide 4 degrees of down thrust
GWS 1147 prop
All up weight, ready to fly,
16 3/4oz (478gr)
|Sep 13, 2004, 06:21 PM|
1180 Prop, EPS-350 "K" Motor with "D" Gearing
Wattage IC-15 ESC
Wattage 8-800 Ni-Mh Pack
JR 610M Rx w/ HS-55 Servos
AUW is 13.5 oz w/o camera attached, approx 15oz with Aiptek
And the flight time: About 15 to 20 minutes when batterys are not aged. At this time, the 8-800 batterys can't even do 5 minutes. So average is about 12 minutes.

Red, try a 13x7 or 13x7.5 on that GB with the SP400
I've got a reverse timed sp400 in a 6:1 GB with a 14x7
and it's a pretty sweet setup, plenty of thrust and I get
about 10 mins at mostly full throttle on 8 KAN 1050's

SS, AUW 24 oz w/ Pencam SD.
"the usual" mods for AP
GWS 400 motor
4.5:1 ("G") gearing
8-cell KAN 1050
motor pulls 10.4A and gives 14 oz thrust, static.
9 minute flight time

does the mini version aiptek 1.3 count? because if it does then i could EASILY get 30+ minute flights with my setup. Its the same setup i use now but at the time when i had the aiptek i only needed half power to climb and cruising at 1/4 or less... those were the days now with the "brick" camera, i need full throttle while climbing and 1/2-3/4 throttle to cruise. still get about 10-15 minutes on a good day
