Out with the Endo - In with a Himark??

I posted this question in the Power Systems forum but haven't got any responses.

I'm thinking of going brushless on my Cap232. The motor I'm looking at is the Himark CEM-600BL-3 from Cermark.

I did a search but didn't find much info on this motor. Anyone have any experience with it?

Judging by the description on Cermark's website, it should fly the Cap just fine direct drive with a 11x7 or 8 prop.

Here's my current setup:
Cap232 44" span
Motor: Kyosho Endoplasma
Speed Control: CC Griffin 55
Cell type/count: 9xGP3300
Prop/fan: 11x7 MAS Electric
Reduction method and ratio: Great Planes GD600 3.8:1
Amps: 39 Measured - AF Whattmeter
Watts: 410 Measured - AF Whattmeter
RPM: 8100
Weight Ready to Fly: 64oz.

All opinions are welcome before I spend the money.

My guess is it's the same motor as the Himax 3630-1000.
Performance should be similar to but probably no better
than your Endo.

Thanks for the reply, Dave. Yeah, I guessed it was the same as a Himax but wasn't sure which one. I'm not looking for more power for the Cap just less maintenance.

Has anyone used this motor? Seems to be a great price.

Alrighty then.
Since there doesn't seem to be any information out there, good or bad, I went ahead and placed my order with Cermark. I'll post results in a week or so depending on when it shows up.

Best of Luck and keep us informed with your results!

I myself have found that many of these Brushless motors tend to be just slightly more efficient than the ENDO setup and some Brushless motors tend to heat up pretty bad if you push them with more and more voltage and loads.

Again, hope this setup will be satisfactory and let us know either way!

Got the CEM600BL-3

The CEM600BL-3 was waiting for me on my desk when I got in the office Monday.
Here's some pics. Nice big vent holes in both ends. Hope they keep it cool.
Whattmeter readings:
9xGP3300
11x7 MAS E-prop DD
38A
415 watts
Don't have the tach with me.
Static thrust 52oz. on my cheapo kitchen scale

So far, on the bench anyway, it seems to be very close to the Endo setup. Don't really know without the tach reading, though.

Hope to have it mounted in the Cap232 by Friday night and out for a test flight Saturday morning.

Couldn't wait..........

Had some time this afternoon so I mounted the CEM600BL-3 in the Cap232 and took it out for a test flight. I left the cowl off for the first flight because I needed to adjust for the offset GD600 gearbox that is not there anymore. I made the changes later.

Temp about 95 degrees. Takeoff was in about 30 feet. It seemed to be a little shorter than with the Endo setup. It climbed out at 45 degrees, same as the Endo. But, the Endo would run out of airspeed at about 300 feet and level off. With the CEM600 it just kept on going up. Definitely more power. Verticals are higher and longer. Top speed is maybe a little faster. Hard to tell. Speed is deceiving because the CEM600 is so quiet compared to the growl of the Endo/GD600.

I ran WOT for about 5 minutes. That's about the normal flight time with the Endo setup, so I brought it on in. Motor warm but not hot. Battery about as hot as a fresh one off the charger. I taxied a bit and it still had plenty of electrons left. So, I took off again. This time in about 60 feet. Did a couple of easy turns around the landing strip and brought it home again.

So far I'm very pleased with the CEM600 performance. Of course, that's only a couple of flights. I'll put it through the paces this weekend.

Cermark Brushless

Sir,Interesting...I've been thinking of ordering one of those...I guess you're plane is a few ozs. lighter now that you are direct drive...??keep us posted with the following flight info and RPM reading,OK..??Thanks...

Nope. The weight's about the same. The CEM600 weighs a tad more than 8 oz, which is dang close to the Endo/GD600 setup.

Beautiful morning for flying. About 75 degrees, clear skys and not a trace of wind. I'll be taking the Cap out in another hour or so. It's light enough out there, but it's a little early for the neighbors.

I hope the CEM600-3 does well because I already have the Endo mounted on my Zagi.

Alright. I took the Cap on 4 flights this morning. About 75 degrees at 8:00 am.

I have 2 9xGP3300 packs so I did 2 sets of 2 back-to-back flights. I flew wide open for 6 minutes, landed, checked the motor (warm, not hot). Changed packs and took off again for another 6 minutes wide open. Landed and checked the motor. Same as after the first flight, warm not hot. After the packs recharged, I repeated the 2 back-to-back flights with the same results.

For reference, I put up the 60" Spad which runs the same Endo/GD600 3.8/11x7 MAS/9xGP3300 setup as the Cap once did. This is a 5 1/4 lb high wing plane. After landing, I checked the Endo. Pretty hot. I could hold a finger on it without blistering, but it was not comfortable. I know in 95 degree temps the Endo will cause a blister.

The ambient temperature this morning is 20 degrees cooler than the first CEM600 flight a few days ago, but all indications are that this motor is going to handle 400+ watts with no problem. There's no doubt in my mind that it provides more power and longer flight times than the Endo.

I won't have the tach until Sunday, maybe. I'll post the RPM's then.

4 more flights this afternoon. The CEM600BL-3 is doing great.

I bought the brushless setup to reduce the maintenance time I was spending on the Endo/GD600. But if the CEM600 holds up, I think it may be the better option as far as cost also.

CEM600BL-3 - $80
Jeti 40A ESC (bought used here in RC Groups) - $60
Total - $140

Initial Endo setup cost:
Endoplama - $19.99 (now $25)
GD600 - $12.99
3.8 pinion - $3.79
CC Griffin 55 ESC - $45 (used here in RC Groups)
Total - $81.77

Replacement parts since March (about 6 months)
Endo motor - $19.99 (threw an armature winding)
Brushes - 4 sets@$6.29 - $25.16
Spur Gear - 3@$2.79 - $8.37
Total - $53.52

Total cost - $135.29
