Are KAN 3000s really that bad?

I've read a few threads on the KAN 3000, and opinions seem a bit mixed. I've seen the graphs, and they don't look great, but has anyone had actual flying experience with them?

We should have these anyday now....they smoke the Kan 3000 and will sell for $2.95 a cell.

thanks
Steve

Looks promising and the price is right. One problem, how expensive is shipping a 10 cell pack from the US to Luxembourg?

Oh....

Sorry, I did not notice that you were International....if you can get Kan from Europe, it's most like lower shipping cost.

regards,
Steve

I have used KAN 3000 NIMH's for a while now in 7, 8 and 10 cell configuration. These packs are powering AXI 2820/10 and Axi 2826/10 motors. The 2826/10 has yet to fly, so cannot comment on how the packs perform in flight on 40 + amp draw.

I have used all these packs on the 2820/10, using 11 and 12 inch props of various pitches, these in a Junior 60.. I have been pulling between 28-36 amps from these cells without any problems or overheating.

My best measured flight for the Junior 60 (2820/10 on APC E 12x8), pulling 29 amps at WOT was 31 minutes measured for the 7 cell pack. This was due to gently floating around the sky at low throttle. When I do quite a few touch and goes and some zoom climbs, I average around 18 - 20 minutes.

I charge these cells at 1.5 amps and I generally see 3201 MAH going into the pack (7 cell) as indicated on the supernova.

Whilst testing the 2826/10 on 14 cells and an 11x9 MA wood prop, I pulled 50 amps out of the pack for 15 seconds, before I dropped the throttle down to reasonable levels. The pack was warm, but not hot. These cells can deliver 30+ amps without problems and 40+ for short bursts (although the volts drop quite a bit when pulling this current).

I am very happy with these cells and they make up the bulk of my battery collection and are good value for money. Nevertheless, for really high amp draw, they will not beat GP3300's.

I bought my packs from Overlander in the UK who do not appear to be selling these anymore.

I have been speaking (via e.mail) to John Emms at Puffin models (www.puffinmodels.com) who has said that their Hiflow NIMH's will soon be available in assembled packs. Their 3000 NIMHs had a good review by Bob Smith in QEFI a couple of months ago. As soon as these are available, I shall be giving them a go as they (the loose cells) are very competatively priced).

Cheers

Tim

That sounds ok. I'd be VERY interested in a flight report on the KANs with the 2826/10. I'm likely to be getting this motor for the Page 80" Cub.

Thanks,
Matthew

BTW Tim, I'm was looking at http://www.aircraft-world.com for the KANs.

If you want more I'd recommend this supplier. Shipping is always $2.50, a a 10 cell pack is only $38, and their packages don't usually get picked up by customs.

What's your 2826 going into?

Cheers,
Matthew

Mathew,

Unluckily I don't have an aircraft available yet for the 2826/10. I will be dropping it into an own design 1:8.5 scale Pilatus Turboporter, running off 10 cell Kan 3000's or GP3300's.

The porter was originally being designed at 1;9 scale for the 2820/10 on 8 cells, but once the 2826/10 became available, I decided to go up to 10 cells and lower the scale to 8.5 to better suit the increased weight.

I hadn't looked at the site you mentioned before I made my recent decision to buy some GP cells from the states - normally I buy out of the UK as RC gear there is cheaper than here in the Netherlands. I have bought my GP's from Cheap battery packs.com - as I wanted to try out a US supplier for a change.

I am also intending to try some of the Puffin Hiflow packs as they compare very nicely to Kans in performance and price.

Cheers

Tim

Thanks for the info.

Is there anyone else? These cells are so cheap I'm surprised more people haven't tried them.
