depron pusher prop F16

This is my first depron model, and the material is great.
It is a scratch built depron F16 with a pusher prop. if this all goes well i wil proceed to an EDF. wings are a little oversized but look proportionally still OK.
wingspan: 70 cm
lenght: 88 cm
weight: hopefully 500 grammes or less
equipment weight (radio, brushless motor, lipo): 200 grammes

Most parts are made, the model is almost ready for painting.

Welcome to the Ezone! That looks great! Congrats on a beautiful job. How
long did that take you, and did you do that from just a 3-view with cross
sections? Please continue to post your progress. Very impressive.

What thickness of depron are you using, 1.5mm, 3mm, or 6mm?

VERY impressive... this should be in jets too..!! you will get a lot of interest there as well because this is very scale etc..

Stefan, this looks beautiful! Your treatment of the forward fuselage underside, radome, and leading edge extensions is very smart. I'm working on an F-16 for the jet design contest with similar construction - great minds think alike I guess! Please keep us updated,

thanks for the welcome. i will keep on posting pictures. i designed it from a 3side vieuw and after browsing the internet found some cross sections aswell. i am using 6 mm depron for bulkheads and stringers and 3 mm for sheeting.

hi matt

do you have more info about that jet design contest? sounds very interesting.
i added another picture from the rear structure and full flying stab detail.
The stab has a steel torque tube with a nylon tube as bearing. this is sandwiched in some balsa and the balsa will be epoxied in the rear slot.
i hope this structure is strong enough to handle flight loads.

Your F16 looks fantastic!

What do you estimate your AUW to be and what is your intended power system? (Motor, Prop and Batteries)

thanks, the AUW is hopefully 500 grammes or less. it will have a receiver and two micro servo's. A PJS 550 brushless motor (50 grammes) and a kokam 3S 1200 mAh
battery (75 grammes). altogether the radio/motor/battery is 200 grammes which leaves enough room for the airframe. this motor battery combination is at the moment installed in a balswood 80cm, 450 grammes, Su26 aerobatic plane and it pulls it easy vertically up with a 9X4,7. ofcourse i will change the prop to get more speed instead of pulling power but still it should do.

Hi Stefan, you can read more about the jet design contest in the electric Jets forum. There is a "sticky" post at the top that has all the rules and entry information. The entry deadline has been extended to November 1st, and the completion deadline is April 15th, 2005. Since you've already started your F-16, you won't be able to enter it - but you could enter something else using the same techniques. I hope you do!

Looks excellent! I'd expect your stabilator mechanism will work just fine for all scale-like maneuvers.

I noticed that you cut out the ailerons and you obviously have full flying tail surfaces. Did you consider taileron control?

Also, how did you create the cool details in your radome?

I started this airplane before i found this inernet site and i must be honest that i never considered using tailerons only. when i saw it here it was too late and i had already cut them. I think it has great advantages, tailerons only, it saves you a lot of work. And i guess if you make the deflections big enough the roll rate should be fine.
The lighting protection strips on the composite radome (the real thing then) are 1 mm strips of balsa sanded down to make them as thin as possible.

the model has an aluminium 8 mm thinwalled spar (ex- arrow from my neighbour (he knows it)). it runs through the centersection to about halfway in the wing. the rest of the loads will be taken by the depron spars in the wing.
at the moment the model is still detachable but when it is finished it will be one assembly

Outstanding!!!!!

That is a fantastic looking '16!!!!!!!!!
Probably the best one we've seen in a while, quite frankly.
The most scale looking for sure.
For some reason, they all look good, but off a bit somehow.
Can't describe it but you'll see if you look in jets at the different '16 designs.

Please man, we beg you....POST PLANS!!!!!!!!

Let us know how the maiden goes b/c I think a lot of the reasons most of the'16s are "off" (I need a better description) a little bit is b/c the '16 platform is supposed to be designed to be a bit unstable, which is why they needed the fly-by-wire setup (not to mention, it sounded like a good excuse for the gov't and contractors to spend a ton of $).

Best of luck finishing her and keep us updated.
