NEAT Fair Sat night slow flyer contest rules

Hey gang

Due to some continuing weather problems we had not had a chance to trial run the NEAT fair Saturday Night slow flyer contest rules, but below is what we are going to "attempt" to do. Rules subject to change without notice.

Model:

Any model, any motor system, ready to fly that weighs 16 ounces or less and is powered by no more than 7 nicad/nimh cells or 2 LI-Poly or LI-ion.

Contest:

The three VERY bright lights we have had the last two years will mark
out a figure 8 course. (lights will be set-up in a straight line)

4 pliots will fly the course at the same time and attempt to complete 10
laps (this is NOT a RACE! you will see in a minute!) in say.... 4 minutes.

You must fly around the outside lights, and fly OVER the middle light to
complete a lap and win the points. Obviously with a figure 8 course,
it's possible to have a mid-air with one of the other 4 models in the air at
the same time, so there is your first challenge!

The next challenge is that there will be barrage balloons all over the
course! They will be lit only with the small cold chemical lights. Two per balloon.

One will get 20 points for each lap completed in the four minutes, and 5
points for each balloon destroyed (popped or cut-away from the morring.
As soon as your model touches the ground, you are out. You cannot
re-launch. If you do complete the ten laps before the 4 minutes is up, YOU MAY NOT pop any further balloons! You must land immediately or leave the course. Remember, this is NOT a race! It is more an obstacle course! There will be about 20 balloons spread around the course at different altitudes.

We had the trial run for the contest last night after the general club meeting. By all accounts everything went well.

10 laps seems doable in 4 minutes, 20 balloons will be too many, 12 will be enough, 4 around each of the three lights. We also need to use a light weight thread instead of string to tether the balloons. Models were hitting the balloon tethers and getting wrapped up in it, causing them to get pulled out of the sky. I did manage to pop one balloon, and set one free!
