This message from "Bill Barth" <wmab@fidmail.com> brought to you by EFLIGHT!

I have an old Paragon glider which I bought used. When I purchased it,
it had a lot of lead in the nose to balance it. I removed the lead, cut
the nose off square, put an O. S. 10 on it with a 2 oz. fuel tank. It
flew great, but now I am all electric. I mounted a speed 400 (on the
outside of the plane on the motor mounts for the O S 10 by using wire
ties to fasten it on) with a 3 to 1 gear box, an 8x6 APC prop. I use a
thunder power 2100, 3 s 1 p and get 30 min. flights with no lift. I
also purchased some thunder power 1320 3 s 1 p and receive 15 or more
minutes. The plane flies beautifully slow, climb out time is 1 to 2
min. at full throttle. I then fly at 1/3 to 1/2 throttle for a full 30
min. or I can shut off the motor and glide for about 5 min. and have
numerous climb outs. Everything fits very easily in the nose of the
Paragon.

Hmmm could we be going back to fuel to power our electrics.

Herm, here is a lead to an alternative Cub gear:

http://www.j3gear.com/

Wm. Wallace
P.O. Box 63
Dixie, ID 83525

He goes South for the winter so hurry and contact him.

I flew the long wing 1/4 scale Sig Cub on an old OS 120 for years and years. Very scale-like flight with a 16x6 prop. My flying buddy, the late George Jordan used a Quadra 35 in an exact 1/4 scale Cub scratch built; also for years. He claimed the proper prop size to be 18".

I still have my old Cub in bad need of refurbishment. I plan to convert it to electric using the big AXI and Lipo batts.

Good luck on your project. You're gonna' love that Cub.

Basic Electricity Pages

This message from "Ted Temer" <temer@c-zone.net> brought to you by EFLIGHT!

To All:

A week of so ago, the question was asked about sources for very simple,
basic info on DC electricity and DC motors. I hinted that I might try to put
something on our club website and I have had a multitude, (well--actually
only two), people write me off-list to encourage me to do so.

My ego thusly pumped up and being somewhat of a pompous old fool to start
with, I have started to fool around with this sort of article. At present I
have a partially finished jumble of disjointed facts and figures starting on
the following web page:
http://www.andersonparkflyers.org/electric.htm
..... and continuing for an additional two pages.

Now I fully realize that there ARE some members of this list that actually
know what they're talking about. And that their expertize would be
invaluable to such an article.

So--I'm hoping you'll help me out. I would love to hear comments and/or
corrections to some of my misconceptions, and hopefully, some additional
paragraphs of information to "polish" or extend what I have started.

The three pages that I have created thus far, are only a begining and I by
no means, claim that they are a finished product as yet. Especially page 3.
But one has to start somewhere and your corrections and comments now would
perhaps save a lot of rewriting before I continue.

Please remember that I am a very old man with a very fragile ego. So please
be gentle.

Best wishes

Something you didn't express there, is copper losses, which are I^2R.
This really brings home the reason that any system at a given power level
is more efficient at higher voltages.

100 watts = 10 volts into 1 ohm at 10 amps. 100 watts lost.

If you make 0.8 ohms of that be a perfect motor (no resistance loss inside
the motor), then you have 80W in the motor, and 20W heating the wires. Now
take the same system to twice the voltage, cut the current in half for the
same power (P=I*V), and the copper loss part is cut in half.

Dave,

Since power is a function of the square of the current, wouldn't the loss be
cut by 3/4 from a doubling of the voltage?

The resistive loss would be, but in any real case, a lot of your power (you
hope) is turned into thrust in the motor, so that stays the same..

The resistive loss is significant though, because of the high currents
normally involved.
100A is significant! I^2 turns pretty nasty, and that's the whole point of
the observation.

It underlines the fact that current is by far the dominant factor in
resistive power loss.

If you could make the resistance zero, then it wouldn't matter, which is
why superconductors are such a big deal.

Dave, Jack, Ron et al:

Since there appears to be room for argument on this copper loss point--I
wonder if it might be too technical for my BASIC, (accent on simple) pages.

Does anyone know of a link to an article that discusses this in a manner
that a rank beginner could EASILY understand. If so I could include the link
as a place for further study.

If not--I think I will wait until you guys get it all sorted out. Once I'm
sure of the outcome of your discussion, I might attempt a re-write, (but
without the math), and add it to the third page.

Isn't this stuff fun? It's so easy to get your fingers tangled.
I use Mathcad normally, which avoids fumblefingers (or at least makes it
way more obvious!) and also won't let you do things like divide feet by
watts. You'd be surprised how many places that happens, and since the
resulting number works, nobody questions it.

On a recent printer design, mostly dealing with a battery, and turning a
printhead on and off at different rates, the formulas went out to 27 pages.
