Bengtson 54" Alb DV

I have the honor of being chosen by Kurt to do another of his prototypes. I expressed an interest in doing something bigger and he redrew and redesigned his smaller Albatros DV to a 1/6 scale 54" design.
As usual this is a short kit with superb laser cutting. So far I have only had to pick up some spar and leading edge material. I will be cutting my own stringers from sheet stock I have and eventually the plane's fuse will be fully sheeted
It will be powered by a Mega 22/20/2 w/ MEC gb and 10 CP1700's swing a 14x7 prop. We're hoping the plane comes in under 5lbs. (I'm flying a 5lb P47 on the same system).
Here's a couple of early building pics (this is as far as I've gotten). The last one is the forward landing gear mount.

Looking good as usual, Dave! A bit large for me, not to mention the expense of the brushless setup, but cool nontheless.

I'm with Kuni...a (smaller) WW I flying boat would be big fun. I think my next cheap project will be a GWS Beaver on foamfloat.com loats, we got Percy Priest lake 5 minutes from my house...gonna have to fly off the water, a good way to get my feet wet...

While it's on my mind, Dave, are you going to use the stain technique to simulate varnished plywood as you did with the earlier Albatros? That looks so nice!

I noticed that most of the WWI designs are useing a "clark Y" airfoil. Have you tried a undercambered wing? The old Top Flight SE5a used a close to scale airfoil. Flew just
great. Just one more question, when do you sleep?

Sure, I have tried an undercambered wing. I found it looks great and really makes the model harder to build. It also slows down the model even more due to it's inherent drag. In this class of model, I strive to make the WWI as easy to build and fly as possible. I probably will do a real fully scale model line sometime. In fact, my 54" Fokker DVII will have nearly scale wings with two main spars and several top and bottom mini-spars. It will also have the "ply" tabbed leading edge. The wings will still be flat bottomed.

Yea I intend to sheet it and stain it. I'm pondering schemes right now as I work on the kit. Kurt and I have a great relationship and bounce ideas off each other when the need arises.
I have a bunch of color schemes downloaded and a couple of books that I'm pouring over. I'm kind of leaning towards the attached schemes.

more progress

Well the wings are done and I've started the sheeting. This is defintiely going to be a bit more work than the DII because of the cylindrical shape of the fuse. I figure I'll wind up doing it with a number panels like the full scale aircraft.
The ruler gives some idea of the size.
Excuse the messy work bench.

Dottney, My vote is for the Jasta 21 profile shot color scheme. I just love that varnished wood look. I t really sets off that DII you did earlier. Keep uop the great work. I can't wait to see the finished product and some flight documentation. Later...Greg
