I cannot seem to get my Futaba GY240 gryo initialized correctly. Here is my setup:

Hummingbird v.II
stock motor
stock main rotor
stock 700mAh 7 cell NiMH battery
DD tail motor
CC Pixie 20P main ESC
CC Pixie 7P tail ESC
Futaba GY240 Gyro


As the manual instructs, turn AVCS mode off and get the rudder trim set to a
steady hover (i.e. no tail movement). The problem is that I cannot set the
trim low enough to stop the heli from spinning clockwise. I can get it to
hover nicely but I have to keep the rudder left about 1/4 of the way.

The only way I can get it to trim properly is when I initialize the gyro with
the rudder almost all the way right.

Does anyone else have this configuration ? Am I doing something wrong or have
a bad component ?

Don't listen to the manual, and turn the AVCS "ON". And, if it still spins then flip the "REVERSE" switch as well.

I wouldn't worry about doing that setup in non-AVCS mode. Those instructions were written with a servo controlled tail in mind. Just put the gyro in AVCS mode. Center the trim on your tx, and make sure you have revo mix turned off at your tx. Then, with the transmitter on, and the rudder stick and trim centered, plug the battery to the heli. Then most importantly, do not move the sticks or the heli for 5 seconds. Then give full left stick to arm the tail esc.

I'm using my E_Sky transmitter which I'm pretty sure does not have a revo mix function. I also have a Futaba radio which I am going to try.

Also, the gyro is not reversed. It reacts appropriately. I have also tried the gyro with AVCS mode on and I have the same problem. The bird slowly turns clockwise in flight.

Are you following the start-up procedure precisely? Can you get it to spin counter-clockwise by giving right rudder stick?

Is the tail motor old?

if so, try changing it. They don't last long...... i've gone to a brushless tail motor and my "GY240 problem" is fixed

That's weird, on my tx, I have my rudder trim set almost all the way to the left.

That's true, I thought my gyro was bad until I went brushless.

The DD tail motor is fine. It's almost new. I'm having problems getting LESS power to the tail motor. I can't set the trim low enough.

I also followed the GY 240 setup instructions precisely.

Brushless tail control and response is fantastic, the resolution is great as well, as compared to the little brushed geared motors.

Night and Day !

Try reducing nose to the GY240. The GY240 shouldn’t be in direct contact with any Carbon fiber, the leads shouldn’t be near the RX or controls etc, and minimize vibration.
