Question
Camera Battery elimator circuit / Free on line Zener Diode selector...very neat?

I have two questions.

I pluged in 5 vdc for input I know when nic cad batteries are fully charged they put out more volts, so just 5 rather than 4.8.

I have 2 cell cam so that is 3 vdc.

I was just guessing on ma cam would draw... . am I close for a Aiptek 1.3.

The wattage of resistor..... if I remember right the wattage that calculator shows should be three times that because you wouldn't want it to get hot and burn up.

A little knowledge is dangerous...lol..

+ in is the top going into R, + out is the junction of R with the zener.

The bottom line is ground, or -

There are other simple ways to do it...for example you can cascade multiple diodes, forward-biased, to drop the voltage down. Most switching diodes run about a .7V drop, so placing 3 in series would drop 2.1V or so and bring your 5V down to 2.9. This is not regulated like the zener setup, but is simple as well and would work fine. The plus side is that you also don't have to have a big resistor and zener to dissipate the power safely because individual voltage drop is low and the dissipation is shared by the 3 devices. The parts for this will also come right off of the shelf at Radio Shack where you would have to order/wait on parts for the zener setup.

Another way is to simply power the Aiptek on USB power, which just involves soldering to the USB connector internally, but eliminates external components. This also eliminates the auto-shut off feature of the camera so it will stay on as long as it gets power. This is my personal reccomendation.

Yet another option would be a voltage divider...setup to yeild the voltages and currents you want.

Or an adjustable voltage regulator.

Lots of possibilities here, there are so many ways to tackle one problem with very basic electronics such as this stuff.

Make sure the capacitor you use carries a 6.3V rating or higher.
