my new wal-mart modded plane

juz bought a air hogs defender but it was too weak.
so i took off the bottom cover and the battery and replaced it with a Li Ion cell phone battery and it seems powerfull enough.
oddly enough i think the weight i took off was the same as the weight i added.
havn't tested it yet but it seems good.
any comments, questions, helpful advice?

I think with what little you have said so far that you are on the right track my friend.
Question, what are the voltages of the battery you removed and the one you replaced it with? if you have more voltage and all else being equal you should have more power.
One thing I have found with planes like the one you bought is that many are just barely enough to get by with and those are the good ones. The fresher ones. Then there are those which may have been there a while or for some other reason just don't put out enough to do the job even marginally.

If you can measure those voltages you may have an accurate answer to your question.

Its a 3.7v lil ion and the original was a 3.5v(measured) but is was shatty current wise.
Only 50mAh and the motors drew 800mAh .
The new battery is like 1400mAh or sutin like that.
I juz don't have a scale to check officially to see if the weight is equal.
Im going by what other people have said.

Ok heres some pics one is the plane.
You can see where the old battery was.
I juz taped the switch to the side of the plane cause i took the cover off too.
Prolly gonna add one mor piece of tap on the bottom for landings.
The second pic is of the parts i removed.
The bottom cover battery and some screws and attatchment pieces.

I have had a few of them, and they all have ALL flown wonderfully, were I you I would have went right back to walmart and exchanged it before modding.

Charging that battery off the radio charger is most likely the problem, you have to push it on hard in order to get good contact and a charge. And have to hold it on way longer then recomended, especialy if the transmitter batteriess have been used much. I never use mine anymore, Used it once or twice , Now I Always hook it up to a 9 volt 500 mah ciggarett lighter adapter from radioshack.

I felt those planes were so good, I have given 4 away as presants and they have all been champs. However,, occasionaly, we burn out the batterys from overcharging ( like forgetting it and leaving it on charge for 10 min at a go. I have used 3 - 300 mah cells, On these cells, the plane flew for over 15 min but I had to move everything around inside for balance, but it worked well, Next time I had to do it, I used a 4 cell 110 mah pack,, this worked excelant, gave the plane allot more power and authority in the wind. The last time I had to replace a batteryI used a radioshack Cat # 23-296
3 cell 110 mah cell pack. This also worked well, but not as good as the 4 cell.

Your standing voltage fully charged on that plane should have been about 4.3 volts or so, 3.6 volts or less on a 3 cell pack means the batteries are not charged.

as far as additonal mods, I never felt it needed any, however, taking off the plastic motor mounts and attaching them with a drop of glue will save weight, also the litlte black canopy and nut can e removed, a bit of tape is all thats needed to keep teh plane together.

How it works well for you,, it should, To bad you got a partial lemon,,, Personaly, all of ours have worked great, its tehrest of teh AirHoggs line we have had problems with,, especialy the resistor,, wat a pile of crap that plane is..

I would say no, as long as the plane is properly balanced..

I had to move the radio forward where the battery was, and the battery where the radio was to get it to center properly.

I think you might go lighter but you would gain very little at this point.

It is really time to go fly that thing! Go have some fun! Yes crashing you probably will do but that is all part of the learning process. Go flying and have fun! Maybe you won't crash! The thing is... You need to get out there and get some time in the air. The more you have it up, the better you will be able to fly and the more confident you will be. and right now you are gaining lots of good experience learning how to build, or modify but its all wasted if ya don't go flying!

Try to go where there are as few things to run into as possible ( bushes ,trees, cars, buildings, anything sticking up more than six inches above ground!

Let us know how it goes and good luck!

It flew!!!
It was a little windy and took wide turns but it flew.
I kapt on crashing it but it wasn't my fault most of the time, it has really wide controls do to it flies and steers using the two motors.
to go up power increases
to go down power decreases
to go left and right one decreases
so it is really looses but its so fun
my first modded plane flies. my first plane that actually flies, flies! lol

Bravo! Hooray!

Thats what its all about my friend! Working on these things are a challenge and can be frustrating too. Especially at first when you don't know what you are doing and need lots of help.

Just remember the flying is what we do all of this for!

I'm glad you like getting your hands busy with this stuff and ask so many questions. Your mind hungers for this stuff and that is great! Stay here and read as much as you can about lots of stuff. You will find many answers on your own just by reading what others have done.

Enjoy what you have, repair when you have to,keep your eyes and mind open for ideas and items to use in the hobby and keep your dreams alive by making them work!
