Do squirrels bury their dead?

Saw a strange sight the other day. While driving home (rural area) , I slowed down because a squirrel was crossing the road. What was wierd was that the squirrel was dragging a dead squirrel across the road. Never saw anything like that before.

As far as I know, squirrel are not carnivors or cannibalistic, so what was going on here?

Squirrels are definitely carnivores, but I don't think they are generally cannibalistic. I wonder if the two squirrels were related – like a mother dragging a dead baby or mate home…?

They just bury their nuts. They leave the rest for the crows and worms.

He or she could have been desparately in need of affection.

He or she could have just killed their spouse and was going to hide the evidence.

He or she needed a rug, cheap.

I must go ponder on this I have read.

Actually Dstout, after careful reflection, I have concluded it was either a male bringing his wife to the doctor who had just passed out from what he told her about the cost of his new electric plane, radio, brushless, and esc.

Or it was a female doing the same after telling her husband about the wonderful dress sale and all the money she saved.

Nothing really bad or unusual.

Now that I think about it, I believe it may have been an alien squirrel "kidnapping" an earthling squirrel. The earthling squirrel wasn't dead, just temporarily paralyzed. I'm sure the alien squirrel safely returned the earthling squirrel to it's tree hole... after the usual probing and implant placement. Hey... it was in a rural area, wasn't it? Man... I've got to stop listening to Art Bell at night.

Squirrels = Tree Rats. Very destructive, serve no purpose other than look cute. I've got one tearing up the attic above my apartment right now, listen to him every night while I'm in bed. Lucky for him we live in a city.
