Yes, it was a ducted fan. Nice looking model, but as I recall no evidence that it ever flew off ground or water. Considering what water drops can do to a wooden glow prop turning 10K rpm I'd hate to think what would happen to your DF rotor turning 30K when it sucks spray. And it will.

Try this:

then enter sea dart. It should bring up the issue.

Bob, thanks for the link. I'd been meaning to try out the archive. Turns out it did fly, but not off water and it didn't sound like very happy experience.

It would be a challenging project for EDF.

thx for the link indeed.

yeah it would be a challenging project. but right now I don't have enough experience with edf jets. we will talk of it again in 3 to 5 years, if nowbody else tried it by then

Oh, Tom! (delivered like Mary on the Dick van Dyke shows)

That's giving up way too early!

OK, so you don't have the great experience needed to hack one out before the 4th comes around.

Having given the Model Aviation article a look-over, we have several things going for the design:
large fuselage with high-mounted wing -- good hand-grip, volume for batteries/etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone bashes the F106 design by the Savage Brothers or the Arrow from Draken.

Hmmmm!!!! Idea to put into planned project basket....
structure appears to be amenable to Vasa 65 fan units

Oh, Tom! (delivered like Mary on the Dick van Dyke shows)

explain because I don't know these shows.

yeah, i would like to like to build/disign one. think this plane is really hot its a shame that they didn't built more of them. but I don't know **** about EDF. 5 years ago I bought the stock of a fellow in my club who was stopping with the hobby. he had build a mig-15 from enlarged free flight plans. it had an eco fan and some sort of car racing motor and was increadably fast. it only flew untill the first turn. there were no fences on the wing and in the turn it smashed in to the ground with high speed. resulting in a more than total loss because it was built like a free flight model, balsa sticks and paper. recently I started thinking again of an EDF project after flying with someones HET F-18 at the dortmund exibit I bought an RBC huck and I started drawing the basic outlines for a hawker hunter F mk 3 for the eco fan (I was thinking of buying it a midi fan rotor and better engine) but I don't know how I had to disign the ducting and what profile it would need to go fast, really fast. the mig 15 was fast but the biggest part of the wing left was something like two matches glued one to eachother. and I had no plans of it so.......
and for the ducting part, the sea dart is even more complex as the hunter because it has two exhausts(is this written correctly?)
this vasa fan you're talking about, what diameter has it? and what size would the plane then be. because when I ever start building one, I want one with the skies. and I would try to take of from the water. we have a long nice canal 100 meters from our flying field. so water is no prob

grtzzzzz

tom

(now I am goinig to swim in that canal)

Sorry, just showing my age as an Early Boomer (and I can quote the Gilligan's Island themesong too!).

Mary is Mary Tyler Moore -- used the same tone when cajoling/admonishing her boss Lou Grant. If you've got RetroTV or stations that carry the really old shows, check for "Mary Tyler Moore" or "Dick van Dyke".

Definitely NOT meant in a demeaning manner.... more like a coach gently encouraging a player (have had "god coach" and "bad coach" in my career.)

As Bob Partington will confirm ,I did consider this for two minifans before I built My Lightning.Perhaps next Winter project. The Skids would facilitate easy bungee launching and grass landing.Bugger the water.
