Well, the only thing to do is get him a good o'l fation foam chuck glider with two servos and a reciever. reinforce it with packing tape and a spar, and give him a winch. Once he learns that, put a speed 280 geared 4:1 on the front of it with a 9 by 4.7 GWS prop. ALWAYS WORKS!!!

If he's proficient with those models, there's a ton of other options for him. Do you have any motors, ESCs, etc? I suggest the FMA Razor $50 if you have an S400 motor, ESC and packs. Yes, IT IS better than a Zagi 400! I beat 30 Zagis with mine in a pylon race, and its clocked a bit faster.
Also, take a look at the JKAerotech planes. Cheap, simple and easy to fly. http://www.fmadirect.com http://www.jkaerotech.com If you want to spend more money than these even, there's TONS more out there! What more are you looking for in a plane? Jason |

For more advanced flight, but nothing unattainable, I'd go with the JK aerotech P-51 (1/12th scale)
Plans call for a speed 400, but I'd go either Turbo-450 w/ 8X800ar and the 6.5X4 aeronaut prop, OR Magnetic Mayhem . . . Hill's RC has 2500Mah Nimh cells that are good at 20A on sale for $3.50 ea! If you can solder cells, that makes a great cheap batt, and reasonably light, too. Either geared for climb, or direct drive for speed, it should work very well. |

JK aerotech T-52 great trainer and tough as 20 year old beef jerky. Can be had for $29 for the airframe and all the gear can be used in future planes.

A JK Aerotech T-52. If they can't handle that, an Air Hog.

hopefully he can learn from me. I became more interested in building and designing my own airplanes when I was about 14 that I never really learned to fly. I'm 17 now, just finished reading Martin Simons "Model Aircraft Aerodynamics" and still don't know how to fly. I guess I always found satisfaction in just knowing that my planes would fly in theory

It sounds like a "battered up old Twin Star" is just perfect for the moment.
My opinion on saving money is to stick with the size of gear that you already have, but you have 400 and 600 size gear - the sky is the limit! Faourites of mine in the past basic training but not too advanced stakes are the Pico Jet Combat and Hobby Hangar Scout. Must say that I'm not too keen on flying the Zagi (must be personal preference ) but I like what I'm reading on the FMA Razor enough to see about getting one on the next trip.Regards, John |
