My Beaver Build

Thought I would try my hand at the DeHaviland DHC2 with maybe some Floats for the lake this summer. Here's the real thing that I am following for my build. According to the DHC-2 website, it is currently "docked" at Nestor Falls Ontario near Lake of the Woods, one of the best Musky Lakes in the world.

Several pics to follow……

Here are the mods that I did to the fuse. Opened up the motor wire hole a little larger for Deans connectors.(red line) I also carved an airway from the cowl to the battery compartment, (blue line) maybe this will help keep my KANS cool...

Here's my Beaver's feathers. I epoxied carbon rods at the hinges for strength, and also added a "U" wire under the tail. Tried something a little different with the elevator, instead of cutting it straight across, I altered the tips to look more like the real deal. I epoxied carbon tape on the underside for strength.

I bought the sloper version of the DHC2 from one online store and then bought the motor and elec stuff from another place…..

but the 350C motor was on back order……

this gave me time to think……….

How ‘bout a 4 channel Beaver with ailerons ?!?!?!!!!

so I ordered a set of custom wings from barrettsrcplanes@yahoo.com Here’s the wing halves epoxied together with the ailerons cut out

I read several threads on fiberglass techniques, so I thought I would give it a try. Here’s the wing with the glass laid onto the bottom side dry. I couldn’t find Varathane, but I did find a brand called Zar, the "Aqua" can clearly stated on the label Water Based Poyurethane (WBPU).....

I just started in the middle and brushed the poly onto the wing, working out towards the edges. Then I used a credit card to scrape the excess off. This is easier than I thought!!!!!!

After a couple of hours, the poly was dry enough to be trimmed with an exacto knife, the glass is easier to cut if you brush the poly off the edge of the wing into the weave….

PS sorry for the pics, must have had the camera un-focused......

After glassing both sides, I mixed in baby powder with the poly for the next coat……., the key to avoiding a lot of sanding between coats is to “think thin” !!!! I learned this from my friend in the drywall business….

While the wing dried, I cut down the fuselage to fit the full wing,
to compare, the farther side hasn’t been cut yet

Here’s inside the fuse with gear installed

I really didnt want to use the rubberbands, so I bridged two pieces of balsa ply and inserted four 4-40 blind nuts, then used nyon bolts thru the wing
