Hangar 9 1.50 size P-51 ARF Conversion

At the Hobby shop yesterday and the Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 was on sale. Opened the box and decided that the Thunder power 10s4p would fit. I have wanted a large warbird for sometime now, and this is it. C50 XL Acro ?? will work. the C50 mount will also fit.

I plan to document the conversion with online photos during the next weeks....only the electric conversion details will be shown, as the model has been recently reviewed in printed magazines (MAN Jan 04).

Note: I am super busy with Family, Work and Testing Motors, please forgive me if I do not cover every detail or question. I will do my best as time permits...

This conversion will have battery access through the Top of the Fuselage, This work must be done first.

Let's Begin by cutting the "Hatch". Using x-acto knife, I poke through from the inside to the outside of the fuselage. Use the tip of the knife to mark the cut line. I followed the Ply Formers on the inside of the fuselage as the photo shows.

Next, we "Saw" the hatch from the outside using the x-acto marks and tape as a guidline for the cut. I use a very fine Razor type saw for this work.

The hatch is now freed from the fuselage and held together with tape, leave the covering on the "Hatch" until the new formers are attached. This is a delicate stage be careful with the hatch as it is formed with the grain.

Next, sand the Original bulkheads in the fuselage flush, so the "Hatch" formers can be made.

Note: The 12" sanding block is used to ensure flush and accurate fit of parts.
Shape the 1/16" plywood following the contour of the Original fuselage bulkheads.

The hatch formers are now glued to the "Hatch". The new "Hatch" can now be final fitted to the fuselage. Remove the covering and Using the sanding block contour the "Hatch" back into the fuselage, this should not take long as the 'Hatch" was originally the top of the fuselage. It is helpfull to align the balsa grain of "Hatch" and the top of the fuselage during the sanding.

Test fit the "Hatch" using masking tape as a hinge. Final adjustments will now be made, using Balsa, C/A and sanding Block to achieve a perfect fit.

The Hatch is now shaped and sanded smooth, ready for covering material to be re-applied. Usually new covering film will need to be purchased that exactly matches the orginal colors. In this case Ultra-Cote.

We Understand the interest in the AXI 4130, I have tested multiple out runners during the past 3 years and Hacker has introduced the"Baby" recently.

I would be happy to try the AXI 4130 in this model, IF IT WILL WORK...Keep in mind this Airplane has retracts and flaps, plus dual servos on the elevator. I will install 9 servos in the model. I feel weight will be an issue and any thing less than 16 lbs all up will be a gift.

I am not shooting for a lazy weekend model for this kind of invesment, I want the model to acheive very fast speeds, in fact I will probably document 2 Hacker system solutions. First will be 60 amps full throttle on 10S4P, 2220 watts. Second, will be a High power TEST set-up, 90amps full throttle on 10S4P, 3000+watts. I have already bench tested these system and simply need to determine prop clearance on the finished model.

Back to the AXI 4130, We have an open account with Hobby Lobby, tell me what will work and I will Order it immediately.

One more thought, We also own a Radar Gun to document top speed, this is getting more fun all the time!
