I've been drawing up from cad plans for a wooden Phantom. It is currently sized for twin minifans, which makes for very simple ducting. However i'm beginning to think that a single midi fan would be a better choice.

How do 2 400watt minifan setups compare to a single 800watt midi setup? I'm guessing the minifans will require more power (heavier batteries) and produce less thrust than the midi. The ducts would be much harder though.

With 4s2p irate 1800 a single 400watt minifan setup weighs in at about 400g and produces 700-800g thrust.

A midi would probably come in at 700g with 5s2p irate 2600s. This would be good for 900watts, how much thrust do you get from 900watts from a midi?

I'd vote for the Midi I've been converting .mdl files with that program from your other post for days! I have yet to find a decent F-4 though...

If we go with a midifan I think the model will need a molded exhaust duct. The jet nozzels are too low to use a KC f18 style exhaust without introducing downthrust. Any help would be great on this.

Here is a pic of the model as it stands, surfaces are finished, may add some fairing towards the rear and need to chop the intakes to the correct angles. Then I need to split out the formers and feed them into the cnc machine. As usual i'll share the model here when finished so others can experiment with it.

Model is 1190x810mm sized for 100% fsa intakes of 2xmf480 or 1x90mm fan.

thats a tough call! With Midi you could poor gobs of power into it, but then you get cost and complexity of pants style exhaust. Also this is one of the few planes where twin mini's wont hurt your space requirements for gear. All I know is I would buy it either way! LOL It's actually a great plane for CG either way also, with Midi you have tons of room for packs on the sides, with mf480 tons down the middle. OK, OK, I'll take both!

Twin Mini, single Midi, Toki, RK-720, Shubi, Wren MW-44 or Nano Bee, taping the panel lines and detailing the belly pan this weekend hopefully go to mold in the next two weeks. The big decision is wheather mold it with or without the verticle. You do great cad work !!

You guys are really wetting my appetite. The "rhino" is one of my favorite jets. A twin MF480 F4 may just be in my future .

That Mini Twin F-4 sure looks great to me, but I think the single Midi would be cheaper to equip and fly. How much loss of power could you expect from the "pants" type of exhaust tubing?

Looking good indeed, isn't the double mini-fan setup easyer to duct than the midi-fan setup ?? I would go for the double mini on this one.

I always thought that the F4 is a very good model for EDF.
